My husband and I go to Greeneville, TN to see our dentist. So after our cleaning this morning, we were hungry and stopped at Stan's. Now I grew up in Kansas City and know my BBQ after eating at Arthur Bryant's, Gates, Zarda, Smokestack, KC Masterpiece (yes, they have a restaurant in KC), Rosedale and many other quality BBQ places there. Here in NE Tennessee, Ridgewood BBQ near Bluff City is by far the best around, but we have been to Stan's before and it wasn't bad in a pinch. Today, however, we were disappointed. We got the lunch special, a pork sandwich with a side and a drink for $8.99. My husband got the steak fries and he enjoyed them and I got the onion rings and they were nicely battered and cooked well, but you come to a BBQ place for the BBQ, right? And here is the disappointment - the meat just didn't taste smoked. We were there about 11:15 a.m. but the meat tasted like it wasn't fresh - perhaps left over from yesterday and it was stringy and had no flavor. The sauce provided (already on the sandwich) was vinegary - not like I remember. I am sorry to say we don't plan to go back again. If I can't get KC BBQ (14 hours away) or Ridgewood BBQ (not that long a drive - about 30 minutes from Jonesborough) then I'll just pick something else. I really wouldn't bother with Stan's again - so sad.
