We recently spent two nights with Bill and Terry at the Hill House and very much enjoyed our stay. We had the Flat Iron Suite, and found it roomy, clean and comfortable. Terry did a great job of welcoming us and explaining the room features. There is a kitchenette in the front sitting room with stove, mini frig, coffee/tea service, pots, plates, glasses and cutlery. The bath featured a claw foot tub, which I happily filled with hot water and the bath salts that were provided after a hard day's touristing!

Several notes were posted in the room and the house- reminder to close the window if using the AC, hang towels to keep and floor towels to be washed, please lock the back door after seven, etc. I found it helpful to know just what was expected, particularly in a "group house" situation.

Drinks and snacks were always available downstairs in the parlor. Terry and Bill were present without being obtrusive. I wish the weather had been more conducive to exploring the yard, but we didn't really have the time. The house was well sound proofed because I rarely heard the comings and goings of the other guests. Overall, we quite enjoyed our short time there, and would recommend Hill House to others.

“Plesant but a little short”

Hill House Bed & Breakfast Inn

14 Apr 2008

We found the Hill House to be a nice B&B but just a little short of our expectations. The common areas were decorated very well and we enjoyed the cookie jar and the afternoon snacks. The Inn is in an area that is easy to find and convenient to the downtown area and the Biltmore. The rooms were also very clean. The things we felt were a little short was that breakfast was good but not spectacular. The room was much smaller than the picture, the bedding was worn and the mattress had dents in them that were so large you could see it under the bedding (a comforter, two sheets and a blanket). If you are a smaller person you find you self falling in the dent all night long. We were in a downstairs room and it was a little noisy. I also felt the paperwork that listed all the rules that had to be signed and returned before we arrived even though we only booked a week an a half out a little odd. In the room it recommends a $5 a day or 10% gratuity for the cleaning staff. I agree with tipping the staff but think a posted rule to be too much especially when one of the cleaning staff listed on the envelope was an Inn Keeper. We have been to many B&B's an we did have a nice stay but would probably look at a different place if we went back because the little things just added up and just didn't equate to the cost.

Management Response

The feedback our guests provide is very important to us, and we do everything we can to provide an enjoyable and comfortable experience for everyone. We generally get rave reviews about the luxury pillow-top insert placed under the bed’s mattress pad. But based on this guest’s feedback, we will ensure that the bedding quality is up to our standards and that the pillow-tops are properly ‘fluffed’.

To ensure the enjoyment, comfort and safety of our guests, we do have some ‘house rules’. Our reservation confirmation sent to guests provides them with essential details of their reservation (dates, cost, directions, cancellation policy and so forth). This one-page letter also provides the guest the opportunity to let us know if there are any special needs, particularly as they relate to food allergies (tomatoes, nuts, lactose intolerance just this week). This helps us plan ahead to have foods on-hand that our guests can enjoy.

We also have a brief summary in each room reminding guests of breakfast time, safety procedures, energy/water conservation and about our dog Bailey. There is also a statement that refers to suggested gratuities for housekeeping since we often got questions about what is appropriate. This is certainly at the discretion of each guest and all tips go directly to housekeeping, who tend to be college students working their way through school. However, this guest was clearly confused about our morning staff. We are the owners and Innkeepers. Our friendly and personable housekeeping staff assists us serving breakfast each morning, so what a compliment that this guest thought her to be an Innkeeper!

As reflected in other reviews listed here about our Inn, many guests comment that the room photos on our website are very representative of the look and feel of the Inn. Additionally, we receive many compliments about the quietness of the Inn. Thanks for taking the time to read our note to help clarify any issues raised by this guest’s review.

“The perfect stay!”

Hill House Bed & Breakfast Inn

The pictures on the Hill House website do not lie, but they do not tell the whole story. Every area (even those you don't see in pictures) is beautiful, spacious and welcoming. Bill and Terry have done an amazing job decorating. The place has the perfect balance of antique charm with modern convenience and comfort. And it's super clean (do they not have dust in North Carolina??)
We stayed in the Biltmore room, but peeked into some of the others while unoccupied. They were all really beautiful and warm feeling.
Breakfast was always fabulous and Terry has cookies and some other baked treat available throughout the day. There's a small kitchenette off the parlor where you can make coffee or heat something on a stove (no microwave and the fridge is dorm sized - just enough for the tea and lemonade they make available). If you need to cook or keep stuff, consider the Flatiron room - it has a kitchenette of its own. Or the cottage, but we didn't see inside that one.
The inn was about full when we were there, but incredibly quiet. Other than at breakfast we barely knew anyone else was there. Also, if you're looking for seclusion, don't miss the option to have breakfast in your room ($15 but worth it at least once).
Although convenient to a lot of things, Asheville itself isn't as picturesque as we had expected and the street Hill House is on isn't particularly lovely. However, with strategically placed trees, Bill's green thumb and the good fortune of a neighbor with excellent gardening skills as well, once you enter the driveway absolutely everything you see is beautiful. It's a large yard so you don't feel closed in, but you certainly feel isolated (in a good way).
Don't plan a lot of activities - if you can bear to leave your room and actually make it past the parlor and front porch, the yard/garden will captivate you. We loved spending time around the inn, enjoying the room, garden, hammoc, porch, back inside for a baked treat....
If you do go out, don't miss the botanical gardens. They're just two turns and about 3 minutes from the Hill House driveway - great place for a walk or a picnic.
I could go on and on, but will end with this... Bill and Terry seem to love the place and love what they do. You can see it and feel it in every detail of the stay. I'm picky about details, cleanliness, food, etc, and I wouldn't change a thing!

My husband and I chose the Hill House Bed & Breakfast Inn in Asheville, NC as the location for us to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary on February 25th, 2008...and a wise choice it was! We spent two nights there and were able to secure the special winter rate of buy one night, get the second night at 50% off, which made our total with tax just under $200. That rate included our incredibly delicious and home-cooked breakfasts each morning, as well as, fresh pastries/cookies and a glass of wine each afternoon. We stayed in the Arcadia Room, and it was exactly what we expected. The bed linens were fabulous, and the room was cozy and inviting. I also enjoyed the old cast iron claw-foot tub in the bathroom. It really reminded me of a by-gone era. Bill and Terry are such gracious Inn Keepers. They will give you as much attention as you need, or as little. They were so helpful whenever we had questions, and they were more than willing to offer honest opinions on the best restaurants and local attractions. The front porch of the Inn is quite large with ample rocking chairs and other seating. We were able to spend a little bit of our time just relaxing there with a glass of wine. We would definitely recommend the Hill House to anyone looking for a very special place to relax and retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!
