Well, that just about sums it up actually.

This place is, infact, perfect. The house is gorgeous, the rooms are beautiful, Patti & Bear (the owners) are wonderful and well, just trust me, you need to stay here.

Patti & Bear are the most perfect hosts in every way. A pot of tea appeared within moments of my arrival, along with a selection of freshly made cakes. They showed me around the entire house and made sure I was comfortable with where everything was and how everything worked. They were always happy to give advice about what to see, where to go, where to eat, etc. They have an assistant, Cassandra, who is also fab - friendly, helpful and always cheerful!

I was in the Sage Room, which has a separate bathroom across the hall. This was entirely mine to use and was stacked each day with fresh towels and toiletries. It was not an issue to walk across the hall between rooms, especially with the lovely towelling robe provided. Just make sure you have your door key and not your CAR key on you before you shut a locked door behind you first thing in the morning before you take a shower (not that I did that of course... ahem..)!!

The bed is huge and extremely comfortable. I was always reluctant to get out of bed in the morning, I was so snug. Having said that, the fabulous breakfast waiting for me always seemed to work as incentive enough! These were always freshly prepared and delicious. I could never manage the cakes as well as everything else, so Cassandra always wrapped them up for me to take on my travels - they were a perfect mid-afternoon snack!

There are two informal seating areas inside the house as well as a beautifully laid patio outside and also the deck where breakfast is served if it's fine. These areas really encourage guests to sit around and chat, which we all did at great length. The informality and 'ease' that Patti & Bear create in their home really leads you to want to get to know other guests.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

I go to Asheville several times a year, and always like to try out new places to stay. I don't know why I do that, because I am so picky about my accommodations, and am often disappointed. I am always thinking I should just find a great place to stay, and keep re-booking. Crooked Oak is the place I want to re-visit over and over.

The 'rural' location is perfect. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by gorgeous scenery and mountains, yet downtown Asheville is less than a 10 minute drive away.

My family of four (husband and two teenagers) stayed in the Pine/Sage room combo, two separate rooms with a connecting door. The rooms are a bit small, but incredibly clean and beautiful. The bathrooms had everything I could possibly need, and again, it was spotless. Two fluffy robes were provided for our use. The beds were very comfortable and the linens were super soft, and smelled delicious. Each room has individual, remote controlled A/C, which worked great! It was warm outside, and we like our room cool at night. The A/C worked perfectly. In addition, the views from both the Sage and the Pine rooms are serene and gorgeous.

The downstairs common area has a TV, games, a DVD player and plenty of snack and drinks. We enjoyed it all as a family every night. There is no A/C in the common area, and it got a little stuffy and warm at night there. Nothing too bad, but maybe a fan or two would have helped. There is also lots of outdoor sitting areas, including a hammock, and a swinging double chair. It is so peaceful at Crooked Oak.

Patti and Bear are as friendly as can be. From our first communication on the phone, to the moment we left, they were kind, friendly, considerate, and professional. You really feel like you are staying in the home of an old friend.

As for breakfast, all I can say is it is... outstanding. My "foodie" husband loved it, my "meat and potatoes" son loved it, my "crunchy granola" daughter loved it, and I loved it. We always started with coffee, juice and fruit. That was followed by a selection of delicious muffins and pastries. Then we had a choice of main dishes. Usually something sweet (pancakes, Belgium waffles) and some kind of eggs (quiche, eggs made to order). Breakfast was always served with Bear's famous potatoes, and a plate of breakfast meat. We never left hungry, nor did we leave uncomfortably full. It was the perfect start to the day.

I highly recommend Crooked Oak to anyone traveling to the Asheville area. I will definitely be returning for another stay!

“Beautiful Wooded Setting”

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Crooked Oak Mountain Inn in Asheville and meeting the warm hosts and owners, Patti and Bear. The Crooked Oak is up a winding mountain road in a beautiful wooded setting and takes advantage of the different elevations of the property with several decks and patios and walking trails, but is only about 3 miles from downtown Asheville. We originally wanted the Willow suite but it was booked, so we booked the Mountain Laurel room instead. The Mountain Laurel room was cozy and immaculate, as were all the rooms, and outside our sliding glass door was a small private patio. The Willow is a larger room with a sitting area and larger bath and deck. On the same level as the bedrooms which is below the kitchen and main living area, is another “living room” with TV, unlimited long-distance phone and computer with free internet access. The bedrooms also have wireless connection for those who bring their own computer. There is also a small fridge with cold beverages and cookies and candy for snacks.

We were the first to arrive and were early but Patti and Bear were very gracious and our room was ready so we were checked right in and given a tour. The Inn was originally a private home and converted to a B&B. All the rooms were lovely!

Breakfast on the two mornings we were there was different each day and delicious! So much food that Bear wrapped up the wonderful muffins we were too full to eat and we enjoyed them later in the day while at the Biltmore Estate. The weather was perfect and breakfast was served outside on the deck. We enjoyed the food and the surroundings and the conversations with both Bear and Patti.

Though the Inn and the setting were wonderful, what really makes the Crooked Oak special is the special couple who own and obviously love it – Patti and Bear. We look forward to seeing them again on a future visit, maybe this time booking early enough to stay in the Willow suite! We were sorry that we only booked for two nights because we would have loved to spend more time at the Inn, becoming familiar with Asheville and enjoying the atmosphere and ambience of the Inn.

“Ideal bed and breakfast”

Crooked Oak Mountain Inn

14 Apr 2007

My mom and I recently stayed at the Crooked Oak Mountain Inn and would not have changed a thing about the place. Patti, Bear, and Cassandra do an outstanding job at caring for their property and ensuring the satisfaction of their guests. The rooms are lovely and so clean! They make you feel comfortable and gladly suggest local attractions and restaurants. I have already recommended the place to friends and look forward to returning there someday. It is at a relaxing spot in the woods--5 minutes away from the town. I wanted to treat my mom to a nice get-away and this place exceeded my expectations. I came across the inn by searching the Internet and thought it looked like a nice place, but you have to experience this place in person--it is even better than their website shows.
