This is one of the greatest place for any family with kids to visit, and we came all the way from New Jersey to visit it; the time was well spent, and all of us had a wonderful afternoon there.
We stayed at Hyatt Boston and took T subway orange line to Downtown Crossing with free transfer to red line to South End station (adult $1.25 and kids 60 cents one way) then walk over to the Children museum.
We are the reciprocal member, so it is free admission for us, but at door, it also says, if the money is an issue, they will help you find sponsor and give you partial admission discount. Otherwise, Friday from 5pm to 9pm the admission is $1 per person vs ($9 per adult and $7 per kid 6-15 year old).
Since the museum is huge, full of all kinds of interesting activities that you can or can not find in other children museums, you want to take elevator directly up to the top floor (4th floor), and walk you way down, save you some energy.
We spent a lot of time at the donated Japanese house from Kyoto medical doctor (his family used to live in the house before 1979) and read books about Japanese home there; that was very unusual experience.
There are skytube spand multiple floors that kids love, there is huge chess board that kids can play chess with lots of fun. There are many activities like supermarket, river flow, mimic handicap, mimic blind ...etc that allow kids get the first hand feeling.
The museum also provide many nice spot with chairs and sofa for exhausted parents to take a rest, reading a book, looking thru picture window to see the river view; it is great!
It is particularly great for family with kids between 6 to 15 year old, but for smaller kids, there are many activities as well. Even adults enjoys lots of activities and showrooms like Japanese house and street...
This is great places for family with kids, and I would hope to come visit as often as possible, at least, once a year. And, this is sure to be a great escape to parents with small kids as well; you can have a break while kids having a great time ...
