“Great Hotel, But Beware”

Onyx Hotel - a Kimpton Hotel

We just returned from a three day stay at the Onyx Hotel in
downtown Boston. We booked this stay on Priceline and
upon arrival were given a corner, very small room. I was
getting claustrophic and called the desk, the next day they
kindly switched our room and I was relieved. The staff was
extremely accomodating, recommending restaurants, attractions and very very courteous. The location was also great as it was
near the subway and the North End which has the best
Italian restaurants in Boston. The hotel is truly a downtown
place, with a very small lobby but all in all OK. However,
upon returning home, I noticed on my credit card which I
viewed online that they had charged $300 to my card. I called
and they said they do that automatically as a security measure in case you used the minibar or if things were missing from the
room! Well, thank you, but how about telling us! We have never
stayed at a hotel that did this. Yes, we received a bill upon check out with the fee for using the valet parking, but another $300 for
security??? Was it because we used Priceline? Anyhow they
said they have released the money and it will come up as a
credit on our card with 48 hours? Has anyone ever heard of
such a policy? Is this something new? Too bad, we had a
great time in a great town, and the staff at Onyx are terrific, at
every level.

“Very friendly and nice hotel”

Onyx Hotel - a Kimpton Hotel

Pleasantly surprised at the extraordinarily friendly and efficient service. We were almost bowled over by the warmth. It was our anniversary and we were offered a choice of any room (all are rather small, but very nicely appointed), and given a bottle of wine. Sightseeing and dinner recommendations were taken seriously and were very efficient. The bed was comfortable. We did not find the room noisy as others have reported and the water temperature was fine. Each evening between 5-6, there is a wine and cheese hour, which is a nice touch. We also received a cute rubber duck. Toiletries are Aveda.

Just a touch left it from being a top star,e.g., no turn down service, the wine and cheese hour offered no non-alcholic beverage...

It wasn't terribly expensive..under $200, but the parking was $36 per night! A nice touch is the pet friendly atmosphere. They will walk and babysit your dog for free.

Breakfast is $13, $2.75 for tea or coffee or a pastry and coffee are $7. Breakfast for $13 is a bit expensive. An Au Bon Pain is across the street. You are about 10-15 minutes walking distance from Fanuil Hall and close to the North End. It is off the main drag, but not a bad location.

“Good staff, just avoid the "penthouse suite"”

The hotel itself is ok--the decor needs a little freshening, but the rooms are very quiet and the staff are nice. The problem was that we prepaid for a king room in the hotel for two nights. We realized on the night that we were supposed to check in that we would be late, and we called early in the evening to let them know that we were still coming. When we finally arrived at midnight we were told that the only room available was the "penthouse suite" that had only a pullout full-size sofa bed (see photo). The night staff bent over backwards trying to make amends, but it was still a very uncomfortable night. When we checked out, the hotel manager told us that "Expedia just guarantees a room", not the type of room, and that there was nothing they could have done about it. We were really disappointed.

I started out looking for a hotel that would allow me to bring my dog ...... I accidently found the Onyx after I had given up the search....

This is the third time I have stayed at the Onyx. After the first time I liked it so much that I joined their In-touch Loyalty Program (I've never been so impressed with a place to actually want to join any of their programs). From start to finish, every person that I met was friendly, knowledgable, and helpful!

I travelled to Boston last year on Memorial Day with my, then, 5 month old German Shepherd for the long weekend. My dog and I were treated like royalty! Boston is a super dog-friendly city and the dog went with me everywhere. When I went out at night for dinner, the staff dog sat and took Finnegan out for walks while I was gone.

I went back a second time last 4th of July for 3 nights and again a couple of weekends ago for 2 nights. Always the same level of AWSOME service! I've been HIGHLY recommending this hotel to all of my friends and family for a year. It's within a 5 min walking distance to the North End, Quincy Market, Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, Boston Common, etc... North Station, the T, and Boston Garden is right around the corner.

Rooms are beautifully decorated, comfortable, and quiet. I've eaten dinner in the restaurant and ordered room service - very good.

“A glorified Holiday Inn”

I have no idea what people are saying when they give this hotel a 5. The staff is fantastic. So sweet and they work so hard. Everything else associated with this hotel is your run of the mill Howard Johnson or Holiday Inn. First of all, the shower was COLD. When I called to ask them about it, they replied "if you would turn on the sink faucet while running the shower, you'll get hot water". OK, well it worked - but what kind of hotel makes you do that to simply get a hot shower. The hairdryer in the bathroom was broken, the walls are paper thin and I heard doors shutting and opening all night. Very annoying. The rooms are SUPER small too. I know small because I live in New York, but this is ridiculous.
Look, I love staying at hotels but don't love spending alot of money. I like cute boutiquey hotels. And I am not a very picky person. This is fine to stay at. But do not think you're going to stay at a trendy upscale hotel. It's a clean Holiday Inn and worth no more than $150-175 a night.
