“Great Place To Stay”

Rutland Square House

My wife, two young daughters, and I stayed at Rutland Square from Christmas Day to New Year's Day. We stayed in the downstairs room which has a queen size bed, a double bed, and lots of room. It connects to a small room with two sinks, then into the kitchen and a bathroom with a shower and cool composting toilet. This creates a very homey, apartment-like feel versus a large hotel chain experience. The owner is very friendly, but also respects your privacy. He'll chat with you about the house and the neighborhood if you wish. Coffee is always ready to go in the morning and there was plenty of cereal, fruit, muffins, bread, and yogurt for everyone. We like to food shop on our trips, so it was nice to be able to keep our own food in the fridge. There were other people coming and going during our visit and all were very nice. It's an old house with some of the quirks of an old house--noisy pipes, water drips, etc which only added to the homey feel. If you're looking for a 5 star, hotel vacation choose a different place (although you'd miss a fun experience). The location is excellent. The "T" at Prudential is a five minute walk and the South End, including great restaurants like Pho Republique, Piccos, Gaslight, Flour Bakery, and B&G Oysters are ten minutes away. First Night Boston is awesome for kids on New Year's Day. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at the Rutland Square and would stay there again in a heartbeat, or maybe next year, if we're lucky !

My wife and I are 45 years old and we stayed at the Rutland Square house for 5 nights. We were on vacation! We flew into Logan airport and took the subway to the Prudential center T-stop which is less than a 5 minute walk from the B&B.

We had a wonderful stay in Boston. The home provided us the feeling of being a Boston native. This B&B is best suited to the well traveled person. The owner is not around very much. We only saw him 2 times during our stay. Breakfast is always ready in the kitchen area. Serve yourself. Cereals, muffins, juice, fruit, etc.

The neighborhood is safe and clean. Many restrauants close by. My wife and I walked and took the subway every where. Never any problems. I was impressed with the helpfulness of the locals. Giving directions etc.

The home and its location met all our expectations. Probably even exceeded our expectation for location. The only other thing that you need to be aware of is that all bathrooms are shared by floor. I didn't expect that when we arrived. I don't I remember ever reading that. But I guess I never directly asked either. It worked out fine for us but be aware that is the case. Two rooms on each floor share the bath room.

Peter the B&B owner reccomended only one restrauant to us and that was Ida's. We were not disappointed. Delicious. :-)

We stayed at Rutland Square house this spring and were not impressed. While the building itself is truly beautiful, the ameneties and atmosphere leave much to be desired. The first room we occupied was equipped with a bed, but did not have a regular mattress but a futon, that can be a huge problem for some people. Also, there were no mirrors in the room, only in the shared bathroom which adds to bathroom usage time considerably. The second room we had offered a regular mattress as well as an in room sink with mirror, which helped, but the bathroom we had to share was a floor above us , very inconvenient for night time trips etc. We elected to pass on the breakfast which consisted of some family sized boxes of open cereal, some fruit and Maxwell house coffee. There was a pervasive musty/mildew odor throughout that is probably unavoidable due to the age of the property, but could pose a problem for those sensitive to allergens. Decor is not an issue with me but as for being children friendly, besides bathroom inconvenience, be aware that some of the plentiful art displayed here is of nude males which becomes more graphic the higher the floor, beginning on the second floor. Our host was a friendly helpful man who does offer freedom and privacy. The T is close, and the Prudential Center within a few walking minutes. Although it met our basic needs I would not choose to stay there again.

Rutland Square house is a funky B&B in the Back Bay area of Boston. I stayed here during a conference being held at the nearby Sheraton/Hynes Convention Centre and was pleasantly surprised by it's eccentric style and the beautiful area it's located in. The manager/operator of this B&B was helpful but discreet. In fact, I often felt as if I had the place to myself. The house is obviously old but neat and well equipped with wireless internet etc. For those looking for a comfortable stay in an authentic Boston neighbourhood, this place fits the bill. Reasonable rates.
