Just returned from a refreshing weekend in San Diego. I had a business seminar and my husband accompanied me so we could enjoy the evenings together. we arrived at the hotel on saturday afternoon at 1pm and were able to check into our room early. this was after absolutely no wait at the front desk and without calling ahead to ask for early check-in.

parking at Emerald Square (plaza hotel is part of) is $24/night for self parking. right across the street, on columbia, there is $15/night parking - however, both lots do not allow re-entry. this worked out just fine because the hotel is walking distance to the water, as well as, all the restaurants and nightlife. we thought this was great because it allowed us to enjoy the crisp San Diego air and work off all our great meals.

we were given a nice king bay view room even though i had just booked the $179/night rate for a standard king room with a city view. the HUGE king bed lived up to prior reviews of comfort and we guiltily watched 2 movies on the flat screen over our weekend for $11/movie - obviously overpriced but a good selection of current films. i agree with previous comments that the room is somewhat small in comparison to other standard hotel rooms. we didn't find it bothersome, however.

we enjoyed drinks and an appetizer downstairs one evening and our bill came to $35 - probably typical for a lobby bar. my husband enjoyed the outdoor pool and free weights in the gym during the day and got some work done in the hotel office room in the lobby - equipped with glass desks and computers (though he used his own wireless card to avoid the internet charges).

the taxes applied to hotel rooms in San Diego are high, and brought our nightly rate up to $201/night - this is a downside of staying in San Diego.

overall, a great stay!

“Not What You Would Expect from Westin”

This hotel is below expectations for a Westin. My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights during a business trip. The location is good for walking to San Diego's business district, and plenty of restaurants and shopping are nearby. I would recommend this hotel to business travelers, but not for vacationers.

Below Average: Valet Service is poor for the heafty $27.00/night. The bathroom was small and the drains were clogged. Elevators were very slow. The decor was odd - very modern furniture in a very outdated room. Hallways are narrow and confustng to navigate.

Good Points: Location. Friendly Service. Downtown View.

We spent 6 nights at this Westin chosen for us by the powers that be for the meeting my husband attended.

Check-in was beyond slow as there was just one person working the front desk when we, along with a throng of others, arrived early on a Sunday afternoon.

We were given a corner room on the 18th floor which came with a window facing downtown, and a window facing the Coronado Bridge--not bad. The room was a little tight but there was more than enough storage space for everything. The room looked newly updated, nice calming color scheme, flat screen tv, very cozy and comfortable.

The bathroom was an odd set-up--the sink area was to the left of the room, out in the open, while the tub and toilet were in a closet sized room of their own with a none too handy pocket door. We really did not like this at all. There was room for very little movement in this room, no place to hang towels except for the shower rod and one small hook. The tub and toilet were so close together that towels hanging from said rod were in the way. I don't know how the cleaning folks work in that tight space but they seemed to manage quite well given the cleanliness of it all.

We had dinner in the restaurant one night it poured rain and friends we were with didn't want to go out. Others had the same idea and the restaurant was understaffed, clearly not expecting the crowd they served that night, but given the circumstancs I think they rallied well and the food was good.

We've been to San Diego before and while we prefer to stay closer to the water (Sea Port Village, Coronado) we liked the location as we could walk almost everywhere....in fact, we did. However, I would stay here again only if we had to for another meeting.

The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to / from the airport and the staff we encountered at this hotel were professional, helpful and very friendly.

“A Pleasant Stay”

Westin San Diego

Our recent stay at the Westin San Diego was pleasant, yet unremarkable. The hotel staff with whom we had contact was courteous and efficient (check in took less than five minutes on a Saturday afternoon).

Once in our room, we were pleased with how clean it was, although the decor was not necessarily fabulous. The bed, however, was exceptionally comfortable. There were several down pillows of varying sizes and a very nice duvet. The bed was one of the best I can recall in any hotel and it made sleeping a breeze.

The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the Gaslamp, which is not particularly bad because it is in an area with considerably less crowd noise. While the walk itself is rather quick and easy, the multitude of panhandlers who fail to understand the word “no” make the walk feel a little longer than it actually is, especially at night.

Aside from the panhandlers (which are not really the hotel’s fault), the only real criticism about the hotel of which I can think would be the $24 per night self-parking fee which did not include “in and out privileges.” I would recommend spending the additional $6 for valet parking.

“Near Perfection”

Westin San Diego

I booked before it opened with a little trepidation, but the rate was too good to pass up. Any concerns were immediately put at ease when I walked into the lobby. It is a beautiful inner city hotel with a highly attentive staff. Location is closer to the business district, but walkable to the harbor and a variety of good restaurants. However, the hotel restaurant was outstanding. Great food and even better service!

The only disappointment was that the room was a little on the small side, but very comfortable and an amazing view.
