A friend and I just needed a spot to crash for the night, since we were running through San Diego for a beer festival and also wanted to spend some time at a pub that had a good reputation but was well out of the center of the city. Our only criteria were to be within stumbling distance, and to have a decent place to sleep and shower.
We got significantly more than that with the Hampton. They'd obviously been through a recent remodel, and the results were very attractive: modern without being trendy, welcoming to both business and leisure travelers.
We had a bit of a problem getting into our room - both our keys triggered a blinking red light. I went back down to the desk and got new ones. I was also told that if that didn't work, to call down to the desk and they'd send someone up. That's what happened, and we never got into the room, but they quickly switched us to a new one.
And it was a very excellent room. Again, very modern, tasteful decor. I was pleasantly surprised by the granite in the bathroom, and we were both surprised to find the giant flat panel TV. Everything was very clean and spacious, and the beds were very comfortable. Despite being near the freeway, everything was qiet as well.
The location's not great; you're in the middle of deep, dark, cookie-cutter suburbia. It's not the part of town to stay in if you're on vacation. But if you've got business in the area or just need a place to stop off for the night, the hotel itself is a very attractive option.
