I have a very mixed review on this hotel. The hotel is located on 34th and 8th Avenue, giving it a central location in Manhattan. It is close to the Empire State Building, Times Square, Macy’s and many other tourist attractions. Taxis are available upon request out the front door, day or night. I took taxis to most of the locations I went as they are about the same price as a tube ticket. The staff is professional and polite are willing to help on a moment’s notice. Hotel staff routinely checks guest key cards before letting them board the elevators, this at least provides a minimum level of security for hotel guests. Access to a food is not a problem as McDonalds, Wendy’s, TGIF’s (FYI, the prices at TGIF’s are very expensive!) and a pizzeria are within a few hundred feet of the front door. If you don’t want to go that far, the Tick Tock Café is located right next door via the lobby. The food is excellent and the prices are reasonable for NY. I stayed on the 33 floor and the Internet was fast, with a good strong signal no matter where I was at in my room.
While I do give Wyndham credit for trying to restore the New Yorker to its former glory, they did it on the cheap. Rooms have been renovated on the cheap, as original cast iron bathtubs and tiles have been painted over instead of being replaced. The shower faucets were very old and needed to be replaced. Our bathroom floor was missing tiles and these gaps were filled in with some kind of industrial white filling, not good looking at all. Overall the rooms lacked real character or feel for the period. The beds, nightstands and bedroom furniture are all relatively new. While the rooms are reasonably clean and comfortable the Wyndham is not a four star hotel. The Wyndham is at best a three star hotel. Wyndham should have spent the extra money and renovated the room’s right the first time, instead of cutting corners, it shows. So the question remains, would I recommend this hotel to a friend? That answer would depend on two things location and comfort. For location it’s hard to beat the Wyndham. For comfort and cleanliness, I would seek elsewhere.

Room tip: NY is a very noisy city day or night. Get a room higher up to avoid some noises.

Stayed at the New Yorker for 4 nights. I could not fault the hotel and the service we received. Mohammed behind the reception desk was fantastic in helping make sure we had a great trip.

Rooms are small but this is midtown Manhattan! Plus who needs a big room there is so much to do in the city. The bed is by far the most comfortable I have slept on.

The tick tock diner, in the same building as the hotel is open 24hours and serves great food and the service was again excellent.

So easy to walk to the majority of the best sights! 10mins walk to Times Square, 5mins to the Empire State, Macy's etc and the Subway is right outside the hotel so if you did want to venture further it really is very simple and convenient.

Highly recommended.

First I'll say that this hotel is decent. It is clean. No evidence of bed bugs. Lobby staff very nice and accommodating. I have never been to a hotel where there is hotel staff who won't let you on an elevator until you produce your key card. I thought that was great. There is a key drop so you don't have to stand in line to check out. VERY close to Penn Station and Megabus. Safe area and near some good restaurants.

The downsides: Room was small but I sort of expected that. The bathrooms and hallways were old and in need of updating.

What are you looking for is the best question for this hotel. If you are looking for a good location which is not so crowded but central; near Penn Station and Metro station.
For me the rooms are not so clean. The carpet was dusty and bathrooms are dated. The one thing I did not like about the bathroom was the shower curtain. It is 2014, please change it. It doesn't look clean!
I would stay in the Wyndham NY Hotel but not because it is so good; it is because the value and the location.

The other negative thing about the hotel that it was loud and our room was facing another building which was under construction. But I was not there with my kid so I could handle with the noise.

The location of The New Yorker is excellent and outweighs the "cosy" room. Small, out-dated room but very comfortable bed. Short walk to The Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and Times Square. Excellent security.
