I routinely stay at luxury hotels in my travels and this had to be one of the worst "luxury" hotel experiences of the year.
The good - Wow, the lobby. Bright, gorgeous, marble, beautiful people. Wow. The location is excellent too - right next to Rock Plaza. Molton Brown toiletries.
The bad - Where do I start. I checked in and the check in staff were terse and not very friendly. I was given room 1405. I took the elevator up to room 1405 and left the gorgeous lobby to arrive at a dark, ratty floor. I was surprised. The floor looks like it hasn't been cleaned and maintained since the 80s. I then went to my room - a dump. It was tired, dirty, and dark. The bathroom was in a sad state of repair - the ceiling was peeling off. The room was gross. So much for the purported "renovations" that were just completed. This looked like the scene of many many late-night benders. After several calls to the front desk (it took three, two rang and rang and rang) I finally spoke with the manager that evening and talked her into switching my room to another room, this time on the 15th floor. This room wasn't much better, but at least the paint was in tact. It did have a great view of the cathedral. The bed was mediocre and springy. The controller to control the lights and heat looked like something out of an 80s sci fi program. This was a tired hotel that needed some love.
Room Service - I ordered room service ad it was decent and delivered quickly. It was expensive but the portions were large.
Overall, I would never stay here again. There are many many better options in NY.
