Tired of the mid-town madness? My wife and I were and we thought it was time to shift downtown and enjoy a real neighborhood. That's exactly what we got at the Soho Courtyard.
First, let's get room size out of the way. Yes, the room was small, but hey... perhaps we are all getting a little too big! The bathroom was new and quite expansive so these remarks are limited only to the sleeping quarters. Otherwise the room was very clean and fresh. The furniture was new and nicely designed to modern tastes. We had a view facing east, and there was not much to look at save the large building acorss the street. Next stay, we'll try a room with a view facing the Hudson to the west. Altogether, the room was great, particular in light of the rate we paid. It was a great value.
Check-in was smooth and the service was spot on. Fast forward and suffice it to say that the service for the entire stay was impeccable. The manager, bell captain, breakfast servers... not a single problem. The entire staff is engaged and it shows. Kudos to all!
The neighborhood is the crown jewel for this location. After check-in, we walked north and had lunch at John's Pizza. John's was great and I ate too much. Strolled through the Village and truly enjoyed the vibe on a brilliant sunny afternoon.
In the evening, we got balcony tickets for Blue Man and really enjoyed the show. The venue is a short walk through the village and again, you'll feel the pulse. Tip - black attire is obligatory in NYC, however, black lights at the Blue Man Group will reveal galaxies of lint by end of show.
Subway lines are all around so moving about the island is pretty darn easy. The next day, we took the subway up to the Natural History Museum to see the butterfly exhibit. Highly recommended! If you get a chance, try the Gray Dog just a little to the north - it's great for lunch.
Checkout was easy and we lingered for a few minutes and shot the breeze with the staff. They were cool and down to earth. No goofy attitudes like so many other hotels. In summary, the hotel was fresh and clean, well managed with an engaged staff, and an excellent value.
West side, facing the Hudson may provide better view. A bit of street noise to the east but no diffe...
