This is a fantastic hotel. I've stayed three times in the past three months, and the experience has been consistently excellent. The location is central, if a bit too close to Times Square for my taste. Birdland is walking distance, which is great if you're a jazz fan. There's also an excellent coffe shop (Gregory's) right across the street.
The lobby is really nice, feels like a chic and intimate private club. Check in has always been smooth, the service gracious. Elevators are plenty and fast - this is not always the case in Manhattan hotels. The rooms are lovely. Spacious, modern, and elegantly furnished. I stay in the junior suites, which have a really nice layout, including a huge walk-in closet. The hotel is well constructed and there's virtually no noise from the street, adjoining rooms, or the hallway. Beds are extremely comfortable. Bathrooms are gorgeous, with deep soaking tubs, lush Frette towels and top-shelf Hermes toiletries.
Excellent 24 hour room service with reasonable prices (considering it's Manhattan) and great food. They do offer free coffee in the morning in the lounge area just above the restaurant. But I typically run across the street to Gregory's. The breakfast is totally over the top, and includes a basket filled with french pastries PLUS whatever entree you order. I'm not such a fan of the "personal french press" coffee service. I'd rather they drop this pretension and just give me some decent cafe filtre.
The staff for the most part is extremely cheerful and helpful and seems to be happy to work here. The sole exception is the front door staff, which tends to be dour and unfriendly.
The fitness center is decent. It's in the basement and feels a bit claustrophobic, but is reasonably well equipped. There are three or four computers in the lobby, along with a printer, available for free guest use. Wireless internet is also free, both in the rooms and the public areas (although they make you pay if you want a fast connection).
All in all, this is one of the nicer hotels I've ever stayed in, and my absolute "don't even think twice, just book it" choice in NYC right now.
