Stayed at the Park 79 in early April while on Spring Break with my son in NYC. The outside of the hotel looks great. The location is also centrally located. One block from the rear of the Museum of Natural History, which is way overrated, and two blocks from Central Park. Staying at the Upper West Side has a lot of perks. There's a large amount of great restaurants within easy walking distance from the hotel and you get a great sense as to how it actually feels to live in Manhattan. Most other parts of Manhattan are just too commercialized or touristy. Not the Upper West Side, though you have to be pretty well off to live in the Upper West Side.
Having said all of the above, Park 79 is not a ritzy hotel. It's a budget hotel. For $200 a night in Upper West Side, Manhattan, it's a deal. But you are not getting luxury. The walls of the hotel room are paper thin, the sheets are less than 300 count, the size of the room is less than 100 square feet (after all, it's Manhattan), the shower pressure is terrible, and there's no hotel amenities(no gym, no office area, no restaurant, nada). Just a very very small hotel lobby.
On the plus side, the staff was terrific. They are NY friendly. That's different than Southern friendly but hey, each culture is different. My son left his $300 headphones at the lobby sitting area but thought he left it on the cab. After a full day of trying to find the headphones, the front desk attendant asked me, while I was walking through the lobby, if the headphones were mine. I appreciated her honesty. She reflected well on her employers.
At Park 79, what you get is value. Its clean, it's convenient to shopping and restaurants (fifteen minute walk to 5th Avenue), and the staff is honest and professional. If you want to pay $400 a night for lodging in NYC there's plenty of places for that. I'm a budget traveller and this place met my budget.
