On a recent short break in New York my wife and I decided to indulge in an evening of fine dining, there are so many good restaurants in this amazing city. The intention was to visit a place that did American Cuisine to Michelin standard, our first choice wasn’t available and as we were searching the internet came across “Daniel”. The booking was made via Roundtable and a couple of days before the booking we were called by the restaurant to confirm.
We arrived an hour early to the restaurant there was no issue with this and were offered the option to either go straight to our table as it was ready or have a cocktail in the bar, we opted for the cocktail option.
15 minuites before our appointed time the maitre d advised us our table was ready and as we were ready to eat he arranged for our cocktails to be transferred to the table.
The cuisine is French. We opted for the 6 course tasting menu, in reality it ended up being 10 courses, the 6 on the menu plus a amuse bouche bespoke cheese selection, additional mini puddings, chocolates and a selection of cakes, which we couldn’t eat because we were so full, they very kindly packaged them up in a small presentation box and allowed us to take them away.
The wine list was extensive, ranging from by the glass to $5000/bottle. We opted for an excellent Sancerre for a very reasonable $65.
The service was amazing, each table has two staff assigned, both members were friendly and very knowledgeable, they took the time to get to know us and ask us about our trip, it made us feel very welcome.
It is expensive and if you like your wines you could easily spend thousands, our budget was slightly more modest but with the exception of the tab for my wedding breakfast this is the most expensive place I have ever eaten, did I feel it was too expensive? Not at all, it was worth every cent.
In summary: Without a doubt “Daniel” is the finest restaurant I have eaten at. The service was dignified and without fault, the food was a delicious adventure, the setting oozes style and sophistication, it is expensive and it’s not an experience I can afford to have every week, but it is not one I regret. My wife and I loved every minute of our evening and I can’t help but judge every restaurant I visit against this fabulous restaurant.
