Checked in, went to the room - wow! What a dump! I'd booked a Superior Queen - I'd hate to see what anything less was like. Went to reception, told them we were not staying in the room, so they gave us another just as bad.

Found another hotel and checked out!

If you're looking for a really tired, run down, grubby hotel with dirty public areas and the likelihood of visits from cockroaches and bed bugs, then this is the place for you.

Me, I'll never, ever go back.

PS, found another place for $50 a night less about 100 times better!

The Portland Square is a small hotel located literally yards from Time Square. Therefore, the location is good for all the major tourist areas. However, I was not impressed with the quality of the bedrooms. I was travelling with a colleague and we had two single rooms with a shared bathroom. I would liken the rooms to prison cells although prison cells are probably roomier. Poor dedoration with no room to swing a cat. The room and bedding were clean although due to the poor decoration of the room everthing appeared dull, dingie and to honest a bit dirty. The corridors were dark day and night with red lighting and dark brown painted walls. At first I wondered what sort of establishement I was staying in! Having said this, the communal areas of the hotel were pleasant enough and the staff friendly and happy to help. I'm not sure what they're larger rooms are like although I suspect they are better. However, I stand by my critizism of the single rooms as they were expensive. I expected much better for the money.

“Great location, but be aware!”

The two of us booked a room on [--] in March 2007. We came to hotel on August 6th in late evening hours and checked in. The room was small, but satisfying. It had a pretty big bathroom, which we wanted in the room and it was clean, with fresh towels every day. Also, the room maid was cleaning the room every morning. The location of the hotel is excellent: 100 meters from Times Square, half a mile to Central Park, a block away from Rockeffeler Center, Broadway is just around the corner, Subway station just down the street, UN building is down the same street, too... The hotel halls were kinda strange and dark, but we didn't mind that at all. They have four computers with high-speed internet access (5 minutes = $1), on one of them you can use sykpe with a voip phone, the bunch of booklets of New York attractions and coupons, and an ATM. The only down side of the whole staying there is that on the checking out we got a receipt that had some balance of $321 on it. We didn't know what that is, but the other day when we returned home, we found out that they overcharged my boyfriend those $321. After he contacted the hotel couple of times, they said that there was some mistake and that they will refund his account with $220 (the rest $100 was a city tax). Other than that, it was really pleasant experience. Next time we will be more careful.

If like us you are only in New york for a short stay this is the perfect hotel...you can't beat the location. You come out the front door, turn once and you're in the middle if times square. BUT this is not a hotel for the faint of heart it's damp, noisy and pokey. Even though we arrived at 6.00pm our room was not ready and we had to wait for nearly an hour to check-in, I wouldn't have minded if the room was nice!! It looked like a dirty, student bed-sit.
Also, around 5.00am the noise of leaving holiday-maker with early flights start's, footstep's pounding down the stair's can disturb your slumber for the following couple of hour's.
However we still had an excellent stay, however bad the hotel!! You're on holiday......you should be spending most of your time out of the hotel !!!

If you just want a place to sleep and bathe while in New York, this is the place for you. If you need room to spread out, a romantic getaway, amenities, have more than one suitcase, are afraid of the dark and are hot-natured, keep looking.

I've never seen such a small room in all my travels. Two twin beds with literally 6 inches between them, and that was the entire width of the room. One desk with a coffee maker. One chair. One suitcase rack. The air conditioner had "on and off" swtich and that was it, with no vent into the bathroom. We had to keep the bathroom door closed during the day to keep the room cool enough to sleep at night.

The bed was extremely comfortable with a down comforter and lots of pillows. The only window in the room was covered with layers of curtains and looked out on to a brick wall, so absolutely no light came in. You had no idea if it was day or night.

The bathroom was clean, but only enough towels for one person. No electrical outlets in the bathroom. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure. Soap, shampoo and shower cap were provided.

The good part is it's only one block from Times Square and walking distance to all the theaters, shops and tourist attractions.. There's a very good deli across the street and an easy walk to the subway station. The staff was very friendly, but the whole place is brown and dark and very scary to navigate. I never felt unsafe, but it was like a hotel out of the Twilight Zone.

Because of the price, I'd stay there again only if I were traveling alone or with another person who's short, had very little luggage and planned to be gone most of the day and evening.
