New York hotels are as diverse as its locals. So many choices: neighborhoods, price ranges, styles. After visiting NY for so many years, over a decade, we’ve found a handful of hotels to be memorable. This review is about the SOHO Grand Hotel.
With a beautiful blend of modern and “Grand” style, this hotel exceeded our expectations. Located in the heat of the SOHO district, this hotel offers Grand Style.
As you enter the lobby, you are welcomed with a modern industrial look. You may take the elevators or the beautiful cast iron and glass staircase to the reception desk. A Concierge desk is located on the ground floor.
The staff was attentive and gracious. When the receptionist, discovered that it was my husband’s birthday –she must have looked at the driver’s license, she gave us drinks and breakfast coupons. Now that’s first class service!
Although the room was a little small, it was great! It was comfortable and modern with a touch of “grandeur.” We had a window facing the street and we couldn’t hear a noise. It had a comfortable bed, plushy pillows, soft and thick towels and my personal favorite amenities: bathrobes and great toiletries (MALIN+GOETZ.)
Adjacent to the Reception area there is a multi-purpose room that serves as a breakfast area in the mornings and as a cocktail lounge in the evenings. This beautifully decorated room incorporates the grand style of the Gilded Era with modern touches. We held a business meeting in that room on our first morning and it was a GREAT way to start our trip. It style empowered us.
On the next day, we had breakfast by the bar/breakfast room. Style never ends in this hotel. The staff reflects SOHO and its surroundings. Some of them look like models. The service was impeccable.
At night, we invited friends to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The lounge area was packed, but not worries. The hostess escorted us to a private room where we imbibed on delicious cocktails crafted by their mixologist.
In the hallways where ice machines are located, you will find a nice coffee station. There is a machine where you can make yourself a cappuccino and pick a magazine for your entertainment.
While the hotel does not have a business center, they have an area where public phones may have been in the past, except that public phones have been replaced with iPads. I needed to have my private car confirmation printed. I just emailed the receptionist and they printed it for me and delivered it in a nice big envelope.
It is so refreshing to come back home from a hotel experience where all of our expectations were surpassed. This hotel is my kind of hotel. You have to reward yourself for hard work and sometimes you must splurge. And if YOU are going to splurge in New York, this one you should try!
Final Recommendations: This hotel is conveniently located near the CANAL Street subway station. If you want to feel like a local, I recommend the Cupping Room Cafe for breakfast: casual, tasty and good service.
My room was facing the street, but I couldn't hear any noise.
