I was looking for a convenient hotel for my 1st visit to NYC for my wife's 60th birthday. Looking for a 4 night stay with handy location for typical tourist sightseeing. We were not disappointed with the location which was as everyone says 'right on the doorstep' for most everything. Subway on the corner and a busy bustling diner pretty much 'in-house'. I guess we Europeans are used to larger rooms but the one we had was ok. Bathroom ensuite functioned adequately and all clean if a bit worn. Our American friends who've lived in NYC for ever thought our room was great - so I guess by NYC standards for a medium priced central hotel, we had nothing to complain about. Aircon worked but was noisy. We had a rear room which was dingy and overlooked the rear of some office type accommodation but it was at least quiet compared to a street facing room.
We did a lot of walking and it is easy to get to Central Park, Times Square, Broadway etc, walked loads and took the subway loads as the entrance was right by the hotel.
Having the diner accessed from the rear lobby area was great and for those of us who have not experienced this style of breakfast eating it was a daily delight!
Having New York friends, we got to see Central Park Zoo - really close by and FAO Swarz toyshop and loads of other sights we see in the movies. We spent a lot of time 'spotting the film locations' and all really close by. Carnegie Hall and loads of other great cultural places also really handy.
Only complaint about the Lobby area was the lack of seating. As someone else said, it's always bustling with people coming and going but few spaces to sit and wait or watch. Reception staff not entirely helpful when we needed a room change. We'd booked MONTHS before arriving and specifically asked for a non-smoking room. What we got for the first night (we didn't arrive at the hotel till gone 11.00 pm due to plane delays and immigration controls!!) was like living in an ashtray. The carpets, curtains etc were so smoke encrusted we found it difficult to breathe. Staff were unhappy to do anything at first and I refused to accept it and would not unpack our cases until we had been assured that we would be relocated the following day. When I asked how we'd been allocated a 'smoking' room when we'd specifically booked a 'non-smoker' , I was told that rooms were allocated on the day as to what became available!! So what's the point in being asked if you want 'non-smoking' (on the on-line booking) and them taking absolutely no notice!! However, once we'd got past that little episode, everything was fine. Porters were helpful with information, keeping bags secured etc.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay. From what I can make out, it seems that unless you're paying heavy duty room rates this is typical of older central Manhattan hotel rooms, its the location counts for most things and this cannot be faulted on that score,
