We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Gettysburg on 9/19/11, and again on Friday 9/23/11. It took some time for the desk agent to check us in, as she was new and unsure of the procedures. However, she was very polite, and we were given Room 101 on the first floor, at the end (we had our small dog with us). The room was in a great location for us, and was clean, except for a large dead bug in the bathroom (it was right on the floor in front of the bathtub, easy to spot unless it happened to arrive in that location after housekeeping had cleaned). My husband used the pool that evening and reported it to be warm, "like bathwater," and he said the hot tub's water was stagnant so he didn't use it. The following morning, we ate breakfast (included) in the small area right in front of the check-in desk. There was a large group of students checking out that morning, so we saw dozens of kids walk by the breakfast counter, flipping their hair, chatting, and I even witnessed one young man sneeze. Most of the food is covered. The breakfast provided just about anything you'd want: cold creals, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastry, bread for toasting, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, juice, coffee. When we were checking out on Tuesday morning (9/20/11), we mentioned how much we liked Room 101, and indicated that we would be coming back to stay on 9/23. The clerk (different than the person who checked us in the previous afternoon) asked if we would like to stay in Room 101 again, and we readily agreed. She punched a few keys on the computer and told us we were reserved for Room 101 when we returned on 9/23.
Well, we returned on 9/23. There was a different person at the desk this time, and a woman was checking in ahead of us. He told her that there was a fee associated with the in-room safe, but all she had to do was request a refund when she checked out and it would be taken off her bill. This was news to me! When it was our turn, I asked about it, and he explained that Comfort Inn charges a $1.50 per guest fee for the in-room safe. I asked if the fee from 9/19 could be reversed and he said I'd have to ask the next day when I was checking out. Then he told us we would be in Room 106. I told him we were reserved for Room 101 and he said someone was already in it. We "discussed" this for a few minutes, as I couldn't understand how I was promised this room on 9/19, and on 9/23 it was taken. So we were given Room 106. This room had two prominent stains on the ottoman, and a lot of crumbs under the bed (our dog found them) When checking out the next day, I was able to get the fee refunded for that night, but the desk clerk told me that if I wanted to pursue a refund for the fee assessed on 9/19, I'd have to take it up with corporate. Well, I don't know anyone who is going to waste their time on the phone to get $1.50 refunded, and maybe that's the idea. Comfort Inn books thousands of customers every night - imagine the amount of fee income they get from people who don't reliaze they can get a refund (or who aren't told about it).
