The McDonald Observatory is about 40 miles north of Alpine. I had read about the Star Parties on their website and decided to give it a try. As it turned out, the moon was at a crescent stage and it was a very clear Feb night. This made for excellent star viewing - I'd never seen a sky so full of stars. We were in the amphitheater about 45 minutes as the guide pointed out the various constellations. It was fascinating. Next we used 5 telescopes to view Mars and several other galaxies.
The previous review does a great job at summarizing further details regarding the program. There's also a daytime program that enables you to view sun spots, solar flares, etc.
If you're in the Alpine area, I highly recommend a visit to the Observatory.
