“Good but some real irritations.”

Hilton Garden Inn Baltimore Inner Harbor

30 Aug 2008

Great location for Aquarium and Convention Center, sports. However, the first room had a horrible squeak in the AC unit and we had to switch rooms.

Later that night, I tried to get ice and had to try 4 different floors to find an icemaker that worked. No out-of-order signs. No apology from staff.

Could not understand the new reception girl who mumbled and didn't listen to our answers.

Breakfast was a free upgrade because we are Gold Hilton members--we enjoyed it but the server ignored us after we got the initial coffee and juice. It was half self-service we guess. Food was good though.

To get to the hotel you go south on President Street until you get to the Gold flame statue in the circle and do a turnaround. This is not clear on most maps. Parking is in a PMI garage on the opposite side of the hotel/also part of Homewood Suites, so you can enter both hotels through the garage.

This was Hilton room quality but with a lack of attention to maintenance and service. Not what we hoped. Final analysis--we have done better at Hampton Inns--lower part of same chain.

“Loved the rooms!!!”

Initially booked for a day, but extended for another night. The hotel was great.
The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, had an overall great experience. Have good restaurants steps away from the hotel and loved the fresh sea-food menus the different restaurants had to offer, just walking distance from the hotel.
The hotel has a restaurant in its premises, didn't try that. A lot of variety for just 2 days...
Will come back again for sure!!!

“Nice, Affordable Hotel with Great Location”

I spent two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn and overall had a pleasant stay. The room was clean and nicely furnished with comfortable beds and a flat screen TV. As for the bathroom, it was a bit small, but sufficient.

I had breakfast at the on-site cafe and enjoyed it. The service was attentive and friendly.

The front desk could take a few lessons in service from the staff at the cafe. Front desk service was at best indifferent. I called down to the desk one evening and was greeted by several seconds of hysterical laughter by the front desk attendant. The next day I went downstairs and noted more raucous laughter from the front desk staff. The front desk staff projected an unprofessional image and were less than helpful. Their fun appears to be at the expense of efficient customer service.

Given the reasonable rate, nice room, and great location I would stay here again. Hopefully the front desk staff will adopt a more professional and helpful deportment.

“Agree...both Good and Bad”

Stayed at the HGI, Inner Harbor for 5 days the end of July. Totally agree with previous review...great location and view...it's unfortunate the view will be obstructed when the Four Seasons is completed.
The rooms are small but comfortable and they are still in good shape since the hotel has only been open for a year. We booked a Bed and Breakfast room which came with a hot breakfast buffet each morning. Omelets/eggs/pancakes cooked to order, juice, coffee, pastries, etc., in short, a great breakfast to start off the day.
However, the front desk employees leave a lot to be desired. The clerk greeted us with indifference on check in. I had requested a non smoking king room on a lower floor. When we arrived, after driving all day from RI, we were sent to a third floor room that had a distinct odor of smoke. We called the front desk and were told to come down to get the key for a different room. The explanation was the third floor had just been converted to smoking or some nonsense like that. We ended up in a room on the 12th floor which worked out well because the view was great. However, they have beds that can be adjusted on each side for firmness and my husband's side couldn't be adjusted...we didn't realize this until the next morning when my husband woke up with a terrible backache. When we looked at the mattress his side was pumped up and my side was deflated. He tried to adjust it but it didn't work. So, back again to the front desk..this time I wasn't wasting time with the clerks...I asked for the manager on duty. I told her that we were wasting valuable vacation time dealing with these problems and we weren't happy so far. She was very apologetic, comped one nights stay and offered us a larger room if the bed couldn't be fixed by the engineering staff. We happened to come back to the room while they were looking at the bed trying to figure out how to adjust the overly inflated side...well, my husband actually figured it out after looking at the mechanism.
Thanks to Alex, one of the managers, she was both polite and responsive to our needs.
Loved Baltimore Inner Harbor area..lots to see and do. HGI is a good deal for the area but the staff needs some instruction on providing good customer service.

“A Tale of Two Hotels”

Hilton Garden Inn Baltimore Inner Harbor

4 Aug 2008
1/2 found this review helpful

Talk about a tale of two hotels: The Good HGI and the Bad HGI. If you're into location and a clean, comfortable room, enjoy the Good HGI. Harbor East is a great spot - literally steps from the best Baltimore can offer. You can spend an entire weekend within a half-mile radius of the hotel and never run out of things to do. It's all there for you: Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Little Italy, water taxis, the aquarium, Starbucks, movies, live theatre, Maryland Athletic Club (MAC) and unique, upscale shopping. The hotel is priced right - even a bit of a bargain for Baltimore, and the smallish-rooms are bright and attractive. The only potential negative is that by Christmas the water view from the harbor-facing rooms may be blocked by the rising Four Seasons/Legg Mason towers.

If you need anything, anything at all, from the front desk, welcome to the Bad HGI. The attitude of the employees of the Bad HGI is somewhere south of indifferent. Regardless of the issue, you will be confronted with an unsmiling clerk with attitude. You will never hear "I'm sorry" regardless of the level of problem or disappointment you experience. Need a taxi? Well, we're too busy to call for you, but you can get one over at the Marriott you're told. Looking for a newspaper? No, we don't provide them, but you can get one over at the Marriott you're told. The obvious response is why am I staying here and not the Marriott? Call the front desk from your room for assistance - good luck getting someone to pick-up (although after about 40 rings, we called on our cell phone - holding the endlessly ringing internal phone in the other hand - and the call was answered in one ring. Bad HGI!
