“One of the most underrated art museums”

The Walters is an amazing collection in an amazing venue in an amazing location - underrated both among locals and certainly among those from outside the area.

The variety is staggering, and I'm not usually all that into art museums, but this one held my attention through all of the exhibits. As some other reviewers have said, it is the perfect size to spend a few hours, and now that it's free year round, I've gone back several times and enjoyed it just as much each time.

Aside from the National Portrait Gallery in DC, this is the most interesting art museum I've ever been to - it's definitely a can't-miss if you're in Baltimore.

The museum is about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the harbor (just walk straight up Charles Street and it's at Centre Street - one block before the Monument), or you can get to it easily from the Centre Street light rail stop.

“Feast for the Eyes”

Don't miss this fine gallery. It is a growing collection, the beginning of which was the fantastic collection of a father and son in the railroad business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and willed to the city of Baltimore. It spans all continents and all time periods from ancient to early 20th century. Some items are not to be found anywhere else in this hemisphere. Not to be missed.

For a non-afficianado like myself, the museum is perfect. Its collection is a superb balance of art, sculptures, history, and manuscripts. In short, the variety keeps your interest.

In addition to its variety, the collection is an ideal size: big enough to keep one interested for several hours but not so big as to overwhelm the casual museum-goer.

I can comfortably recommend this museum to people who want a great museum experience as well as to people who are being dragged kicking and screaming to a museum.

Finally, if you want to have an almost a private viewing of the holdings, arrive shortly after opening (10 am) on Sunday. The museum is fully staffed, so you don't feel isolated. At the same time, though, you have the luxury of moving along at your own pace.

At this charming art museum,I savored fine Italian Renaissance paintings by Naddo Ceccarelli,Marco Zoppo,Nicolo de Segna,Giovanni di Paolo,Raphael, and Veronese.I also appreciated fine Baroque paintings by Paolo Paolini,Leandro Bassano,Candlelight Master, and G.B Tiepolo. This museum has an enormous collection of nineteenth century art that includes fine paintings by Gerome,Alma-Tadema,Corot,Manet,Monet,Pissarro,Sisley,and Puvis de Chavannes.I also saw great sculptings by Barye.Their collection of Medieval Art is very special and includes fine works by Bernhard Strigel,Hugo Van Goes, and Master of the Joseph Sequence and lots of awesome sculpture. The Walters is a fountain of knowledge in Baltimore's colorful Mount Vernon District.

“Art Blooms a Wonderful Event”

The Walters Art Museum

What a delightful art event. The Walters Art Museum is situated in downtown Baltimore. I happened to be in town to visit my parents in Annapolis and looked online to find something to do. This intimate museum was abuzz with activity for the multi-day annual "Art Blooms at the Walters." Each room had a volunteer available to explain the relevance of a flower arrangement created by a local floral artist to a masterpiece which is part of an extensive collection. The floral arrangements stood on pedestals in front of the art that had inspired them. The volunteers were pleasant and available to talk at length about the piece of art as well as the floral interpretation.

I would recommend this event for children at least 8 years old. My mother was in a wheelchair and was able to see everything even though the converted home contains several levels and passageways.
