Just wanted to mention to those contemplating a visit in the near future that magnificent fresh flower arrangements inspired by and reflecting individual works of art are currently on display. The beauty, scents and cleverness of the flower arrangements definitely add to what is already a jewel of a museum. In general, the collections are wonderfully displayed, with a clearly legible paragraph of pertinent, enjoyment-enhancing information affixed to the wall next to each painting. As mentioned in previous posts, entrance to the museum is free, although there is a charge for the current exhibit of maps that sounds fascinating but which I did not have time to see. I look forward to sharing the museum with friends and family on future visits.

I chose to go to this museum on a Friday night when the hours are extended. There weren't a lot of people there which added to my enjoyment. They have free audio wands which I highly recommend taking around with you in order to learn more about what you are seeing. There are quite a few interesting galleries and one room is devoted to ephemera and oddities including a HUGE world atlas.

There is so much to see that a first time visitor may be overwhelmed with the variety of things to see. I look forward to coming back here on my next Baltimore trip to explore it more thoroughly!

The Walters is an amazing collection in an amazing venue in an amazing location - underrated both among locals and certainly among those from outside the area.

The variety is staggering, and I'm not usually all that into art museums, but this one held my attention through all of the exhibits. As some other reviewers have said, it is the perfect size to spend a few hours, and now that it's free year round, I've gone back several times and enjoyed it just as much each time.

Aside from the National Portrait Gallery in DC, this is the most interesting art museum I've ever been to - it's definitely a can't-miss if you're in Baltimore.

The museum is about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the harbor (just walk straight up Charles Street and it's at Centre Street - one block before the Monument), or you can get to it easily from the Centre Street light rail stop.

Don't miss this fine gallery. It is a growing collection, the beginning of which was the fantastic collection of a father and son in the railroad business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and willed to the city of Baltimore. It spans all continents and all time periods from ancient to early 20th century. Some items are not to be found anywhere else in this hemisphere. Not to be missed.
