My girlfriend and I stayed at the Admiral Fell a few years back and it was an amazing experience...so we recently revisited the hotel for a weekend stay. Not the same as before, to be sure.
We arrived to drop the car at the valet service, who was a little rude. Bear in mind here that the valet service is $30/day. On the second day, the same valet was equally rude. I locked up the car and went into the hotel to find someone to take my car, since despite the fact that he saw us pull in, he didn't leave his post at the restaurant entrance.
The rooms are not elaborate and beyond the front facade, "historic" dissipates quickly. Those with disabilities might find the steps a bit daunting. Even though we had an elevator to the second floor, we still dragged our luggage up 11 steps to get to our room. Housecleaning was a bit lax as we not only found hair on the bed and in the bathroom, but clothing in the drawer from a previous guest.
The once impressive breakfast buffet from a few years back has been broken into two tiny shops which are very cramped. This is a really simple continental breakfast now. Seating is extremely limited. Our waitress was apparently disinterested in our table and we needed to ask several times for drinks. Eventually we asked a bus person for the drinks and he was more than happy to bring them.
We did not visit the two restaurants in the hotel, so we have little to report there. We did try room service..Three appetizers and four drinks totaled over $65.00.
Fell's Point is a sweet little cobblestone area that is not without it's beauty. But, be aware that this location is full of bars and can be pretty noisy at night. I didn't bother to count the bars, but there is truly an astonishing number in a tight radius. There is a plaza directly across from the hotel that would be a great family place, but for the folks that gather there begging for cash and occasionally getting into heated exchanges with loud profanity. Personally, I wouldn't bring my kids here.
There are lots of hidden charges levied by the hotel and lots of extra city charges and taxes. Two nights stay with valet parking and one room service came to over $500.00, even though the room rate was only $159/night.
It's a nice place, but I don't regard it as above average. This is a very cool hotel overall, and the front desk staff were fantastic.
There are just a few items that should be polished up and streamlined. A greater effort should be made to include useful additions, such as complimentary water taxi tickets. In my opinion, valet parking should be included for every guest at no additional charge (on street parking is $1.00/hour). The valet parking is not only expensive but it is unhandy. I prefer to have my car when I want it, where I want it. Breakfast should be included for every guest, who can be assured of a chair to sit in. I see no need for a special package or "free ticket" to get your breakfast.
