I had to spend a couple days (one night) in Baltimore on business. Every rental car in the city was booked and no hotels were discounting. It was Preakness week and the Red Sox were in town. The hotel website had me believe that it was close to the inner harbor, etc. Here's what I found - a hotel off a highway exit in a very bad part of town adjacent to a truck stop and a low income housing project. The hotel has a free shuttle but takes a while to get where you want. I wound up taking a cab a couple of times. The "free" breakfast was awful and served (not served - everything is on a wooden table and you grab the food and nothing is hot, no eggs or anything like that) on paper plates. The room was okay. I had to pay close to $200 (company paid) to stay at this dive. I tried to save my company some money as every half decent (not even great) hotel in town was over $400 per night. The hotel staff is nice. But this hotel can't escape what it is.

I was a little worried given some earlier reviews of this hotel, but my stay was fine. I spent three weeknights while my mother was recovering from surgery at nearby Kernan hospital. The room was clean and well furnished with pretty recent stuff; the fridge, microwave, TV and everything all worked just fine. The bed was pretty comfy and the shower was hot in the morning. I wish the cable selection included more channels like Bravo and SciFi, but it was ok.

I had a room overlooking the pool, and so I didn't hear much traffic noise. It was midweek and there didn't seem to be many people, so I didn't hear any external or neighbor noise. I can see how if there were people outside in a party mood (on the weekend maybe) the voices would carry. I used the fitness room which was ok, though the counter on the elliptical was a little fritzy. I stopped in for breakfast one morning, which was just bagels and sweet rolls etc but was ok, too.

For free high-speed internet, they'll give you a cable at the front desk since they don't have wireless. It was really convenient to Kernan, down the road from fast food restaurants, and just across the street from a mall with a grocery store where I got some food to heat up. The property itself is back from the main business area, up a side road, so there's not much local traffic.

I'm a single middle-aged woman and I felt pretty safe. There was a delay the night I checked in when nobody was at the desk, but the security guard was there and was very nice and went to find a desk clerk. Overall, it was pretty standard motel fare: maybe not quite worth the price given that it's still just really a motel, but comparable to what else is in the area. And it does seem like they're trying to get their act together and provide good service to their customers.

“They lost my clothing !”

Best Western Baltimore West

I'd been out of my room from early morning 'til evening and when I went to get dressed for bed, I noticed that some of my clothing was missing. I immediately called the front desk because the maids had cleaned my room that morning. The person at the front desk said she'd look in the garbage for my clothing. I don't believe she ever did. She told me later that night to make a list of what was missing and present the list at checkout the next morning. At checkout they told me the general manager would contact me within the day. I waited 'til the next day, and when no one had contacted me, I phoned the hotel. I was told the general manager went on vacation. I asked if someone else could deal with this problem since the general manager was away. I was told that one of two people would phone me back. I waited about three days for someone to phone me back, but they never did. I phoned the hotel again and asked for housekeeping. The head of housekeeping (who had the same last name as the general manager) said she'd look in the lost and found. She didn't find my things in lost and found. She said she'd talk to her staff who'd cleaned my room on the day in question and phone me back in a couple days. The phone call never came. I then phoned the 800 complaint line for Best Western. I was told I had to wait until a week after I'd checked out to file a complaint. I phoned the 800 number back a couple days later and filed a complaint. They told me that the hotel's general manager had 7 days to respond. After 7 days passed, the 800 number phoned me and said the general manager had made no response. I then filed an on-line complaint. Again, zero satisfaction. The *ONLY* satisfaction I received was from American Express because I'd charged my airline ticket on my American Express card and I have trip insurance. My clothing loss was covered under my trip insurance.

My wife and I had to travel down to Baltimore for a wedding this past weekend. The wedding was held at Martins West which is almost in the parking lot of this hotel. We were prepared for the worst after seeing some reviews on hotels.com. We arrived and the gentlemen on the desk was very nice. This hotel has rooms that open to the outside like the old style highway motels. The rooms were comfortable and the carpet looked brand new. The decor was a little dated but other than that, the room was good. The bathroom had a cruved shower curtain and everything was clean. We walked to the wedding and I thought it was ok for the price. It is not a four star hotel by any stretch, but ok for 2 nights.

After booking on Hotwire, and reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, I was quite worried. However, the staff was courteous, the room was clean (with a definite oder of new carpet), and the complimentary breakfast was better than I expected. Obviously, they are trying to get their act together. I will return.
