We drove down to Bonaventure Cemetery during our visit to Savannah. After parking and picking up a map at the "visitor center" (there is a rest room here too) we started our stroll through this massive and unusual place. The setting is quite beautiful, with tree-lined lanes, Spanish moss hanging from trees, various plants in bloom, and so very quiet. There are amazingly diverse tombstones and grave markers with designs and details and ornamentation like we've never seen before. At the far end of the cemetery, you come to the edge of the river and the scene is peaceful and striking. We found Johnny Mercer's grave - many before us had come to pay tribute to this music master with bouquets of flowers. You'll see simple tombs and headstones and you'll see monuments and incredible sculpture. No visit to Savannah is complete without a trip to this place.
