Just got back from staying at the Gateway Inn for 2 nights. I planned a last minute Memorial Weekend trip to Savannah. Most of the hotels with less expensive rooms were sold out, I saw 2 good reviews on here for the Gateway so I decided to book. The hotel location is decent, about 15 minutes from downtown Savannah. I arrived at the hotel, women at the front desk was friendly. I told her I would like a king size, no smoking. I walked into the room and was overwhelmed by the smell of smoke. This wasn't a hint of smoke, it smelled like a cuban cigar factory. I look up and see wires hanging from the cieling, where the smoke detector was located at one time. I open a draw and noticed an empty pack of cigarettes. Not a good start, but I was tired and did not want to deal with switching rooms. I then begin looking around to make sure things are at least clean. First thing I notice are all the small white stains in the blue carpet around the bed. I am sure most adults here can guess what this was, or at least what I think it was. I decided I would would wear my flip flops at all times after seeing that. Next, I see a hole in the bathroom door, where it looks like someone decided to punch or kick it. My wife calls me into the bathroom and says the toilet moves when you sit on it. I thought she meant the toilet seat moves, which I told her was somewhat normal. She then says no, the whole entire toilet moves. I look down, and there are no bolts/nuts holding the toilet in place. I then work my way to the bed, scared what I might find on the sheets. Well, the sheets seemed clean, although there were 3 cigarette holes burnt into them. We decided we would sleep on our towels that we brought. Some positive things, there were no roaches/bugs, the AC/Shower worked fine, TV has cable, and the front desk people were nice. I have traveled extensively and stayed in some very poor hotels/hostels in Europe, Central and S. America. I am not one of those persons who stays at a $70 p/n hotel and expects a $500 p/n room and service. My bill averaged out to ~$73 per night at this hotel. The Gateway is a $35-$40 p/n hotel period. I am suprised they don't rent rooms out by the hour. If I had to do it over, I would have much rather spent an extra $50 per night to stay somewhere else. I will never stay here again and would not recommend this hotel(no matter how nice the people at the front desk are).
