“Great Bargain for Savannah Walking Tourists”

The Confederate House

22 May 2008

We were fortunate enough to stay at the Confederate House in Mid-May 2008, and had a wonderful time. The Inn is right on Forsyth Park on Drayton Street, which runs right into the River Walk area. Just a few houses down from ritzy "Mansion on Forsyth," this inn was a great bargain that gave us the combination of an antebellum home, Southern hospitality, and easy transportation into the heart of the historic district (shuttle stop is 1 block away, and the tour buses run by every few minutes). We felt very much like we were staying with relatives - the kind who make sure we're taken care of without being clingy. The bathroom in the Robert E. Lee room is the sunniest place I've ever been while still being indoors, and the bed gave us some of the best sleep we've ever had while traveling. Breakfast on family china and silver was a Savannah way to start the day, and the beautiful antiques in the bedroom and common areas served as a nice mini-museum when we weren't out and about. We hope to return to the Confederate House on our next trip!

This B&B was not friendly at all. We only saw the owner once when we checked in. Knocked on the door , no answer. Had to figure out where to go to find anyone, turned out to be around the side on the ground level. Was not told where to park before we got there. Had to find that ourselves too. She gave us no useful info about the historic district, no brochures or map. We started out walking, met some other tourists who kindly gave us their street map. The bed was uncomfortable, pillows were awful, headboard was broken, there were no towel bars in the bathroom. As for the breakfast part of B&B, it was probably the worst we ever had. It is on the fringe of the historic district at the opposite end from the river. Not a convenient location for walking around. Think twice before you book this b&b. We would never stay there again.

Some people love it here and others don't. some people are just not very happy people. I feel very badly for these people and hope life gets better for them.

The confederate house is a beautiful place to stay. The breakfasts were delicious and the mansion is beautifully decorated and very clean. Best of all, the beds are extremely comfortable and the price is right.

“very bad shape - lipstick on a pig”

We really wish we had researched this place first. We were getting married that weekend and wanted to find a nice place. We followed the directions and parked in lot just behind the house. From the back, the house appeared rusted, rotted, and in need of a lot of repair. We walked around to the front and even though it had been painted in the last few years, it still appeared very rough. Kind of like putting lipstick on a pig. We noticed that the front door had cracks and was also rotted. We went in anyway and it just kept getting worse. The walls were filthy and the floor was a horrible and dated parkey floor. The place smelled of mildew. We checked out the bedroom and it was no better. We left and called Visa to dispute the charges. We were lucky enough to walk a half a block to the Mansion hotel. This place was awesome. They had a cancellation and we were able to get us in. They upgraded us and we could not have been happier.

“No Southern Hospitality”

The Confederate House

I'm not sure where to start. Take your own light bulbs, only 5 out of 11 lights worked and our hostess would not provide more. Take tissues, she won't give you any.Bring your own bar soap and shampoo. We didn't see our hostess for 2 days after we arrived. We had a 12 hour power outage and weren't offered so much as a candle. She never came to tell us there were tornado warnings and severe weather warnings. She likes to share her drama but isn't very concerned with your comfort.

This lady was something else we all tried to stay out of her way no matter what we did for her she made life uncomfortable for everyone around her to the point people were asking when she was leaving. We had no warning of a tordardo the lights in the entire city went out which had not happened in the 33 years we have lived here nobody was giving out any information it was scary for everyone as the rangers who went to the middle east came from Fort Hunter here in Savannah we did not know what we were dealing with not only Chatham county but three other counties were in a state of total darkness. The lights went out a little after 9 PM and did not come back on until a little after 9 AM. In our private living quarters there is a gas stove in the kitten so we cooked on that and brought the food up to the dining area so the guest would have a hot cooked breakfast. and she later complained about that. The bathrooms have 3 different kinds of sop for the guests and body lotion,we also provide free bottled water and soft drinks for the guests with coffee, cookies and candy 24 hours a day. the guests are well feed and provided for here that is why we have repeat business. After staying here 4 nights she sent us a nasty letter caomplaing about the workmanship of the carppenters wh did our house over for us and said i should not have paid them. We used union carpenters ant the union formed a special crew of forman and master carpenter to work on this house. they did a beautiful job. She also wanted her money back for all 4 nights that she stayed here. if it was so bad she should have looked at the room and not stayed. She and her husband told me when they checked in this economy has hit his business. if the cash flow for them is so bad they should not be traveling and expect to get their money back after staying somewhere 4 nights. No hotel in this country gives a refund after you have stayed there 4 nights and neither do we. She did not ask for arefund until after she got home. There were no tornados in this area a power plant in a different county was hit by lighting and we found out that supplied the electric to all four counties. This house did have emergency lighting .
