We were in Savannah for three nights and ate at Vic's on the River the first night we arrived. The restaurant is located in an old refurbished four-story cotton warehouse. We started out in the bar and each ordered a martini. They have a martini menu which was nice (I like to see what goes into my cocktails !). We enjoyed the bar area with a piano man playing some Johnny Mercer tunes, so we decided to eat in the bar area for dinner (which is just as nice as the main dining room, in my opinion).
We first ordered the appetizer – Jumbo Lump Crab Cake remoulade and three pepper relish. It was very good, crab pieces were big, cooked just right and presented well on the plate with the three pepper sauce. Next we each had a house salad – nothing out of the ordinary with this course. Our main courses were mostly fabulous with my husband’s Wild Georgia Shrimp hitting the highest mark. It was served with stone ground grits, andouille sausage and tasso gravy – I thought my husband died and went to heaven when he tried the gravy (he likes a good roux).
I had the Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops which were served on lump crab risotto, wilted arugula and lemon herb truffle sausage. I think there were five large scallops, which were at tad undercooked but tasty. The risotto was creamy but I had a hard time finding the lump crab. In all, my entrée was very good, but with a little more effort, the chef would get a “great food” rating from me. I thought the portions were just right, not too much food and we were full enough to pass on dessert (too bad, because I love dessert!). The whole meal was about $105 before the tip for two of us and including our martinis - which I sheepishly admit we both had two. Not bad considering the quality and amount of food we ate.
By the way, the restaurant is on the Savannah River but you should know that your actually four floors above the river, not sitting right on it. I just envisioned us sitting right on the river given the restaurant name. Once dinner was over and we tipped the piano man and then took the restaurant’s elevator to the ground floor. This spills you right onto River Street where you can stroll off your dinner. River Street has shops and more restaurants and is actually directly on the Savannah River.
