My husband and I visited Savannah in September 2008. We loved the city and its rich history. We recently have become interested in the paranormal and thought it would be exciting to take a ghost tour of the most haunted city in the US. So, we got a selection of about 5-7 brouchures for haunted tours, read them all and found the one we thought was most interesting. The brochure said it was called "The Truthseeker's Tour"; we chose this one because it had a list of 8 different locations that sounded like places we would like to experience. So, I called and made reservations for the 7:30 tour, and was told to meet at Clary's Cafe (when the flyer said it started at Johnson Square).
When we arrived at Clary's Cafe we were greated by our tour guide, Dawn Laxton, and the other members of our tour. We had a small group (4 people and the guide), so we were pretty excited about the possibility of a personalized experience. The tour started with Dawn introducing us to herself, and giving us a little overview of what we would be seeing in the next two hours.
Once the actual tour began we spent about 1 hour and 15 minutes sitting on park benches listening to Dawn tell the stories of the haunted history of Savannah and about 45 minutes actually attempting to experience the paranormal. I will not complain about Dawn's stories, she has a vast knoledge of Savannah and its history, but I will complain about the actual tour stops. We went to three different houses on this tour. Two of which we walked around and looked in windows and mailslots using flashlights (and attemped to break into), and the third is occupied, so we just walked around it. The two that we looked into the windows and mailslots of Dawn also attempted to break into (saying the owners didn't mind) the first she was unsuccessful, and the second we were able to go into the basement of. Yes, it was exciting to go inside, but we felt it was very unprofessional telling us that she hoped they had forgot to lock it so we could sneak in.
Perhaps my expectations were to high, but I was disappointed. I expected to visit some if not all of the locations listed on the brochure, but we vistied none of them. When my husband asked Dawn about this she said that she mixes the tours up, so she goes to different locations with each tour. With 8 locations listed on the brochure, I can understand not going to all of them, but I would have expected to go to some of them. Also, I expected to be able to enter some of the locations (legally), and was disappointed that we could only peer through windows using flashlights.
Finally, we felt that some of Dawn's comments were unnecessary and strange. For example...we were in Monterey Square and she told us that it is said that animals do not like this square and sometimes refuse to walk accross it. As she was telling us this, there were two dogs coming from each direction, one of which the owner was trying to hold back and was not letting walk because it wanted to attack the other dog, seeing this Dawn commented that the dog does not seem to want to cross (when the dog wanted to cross, but the owner was not letting it). We were not buying into what she was selling.
To wrap up-we vacation a lot and love to travel and experience new things, but were very disappointed with this tour. It was not worth the money, and it did not give us what the brochure advertised. To be fair though, we have not gone on any other haunted city tours, so this may be par for the course???
