“Friendly, youth-oriented place”

Wild Wing Cafe

10 Mar 2008

Wild Wing is right in the middle of City Market, a wonderful tourist-oriented are of downtown Savannah. It has two levels, with music upstairs the night we were there, loads of TVs for sports-watching, and a menu of what might be called bar food.

Thirty-something varities of chicken wings are the main attraction. We had some of the BBQ flavor (don't be fooled, they are a bit spicy, in spite of what the waitstaff says) and the nachos, which were good, Drinks are bountiful -- one reason for the popularity of this place. Service was friendly and prompt.

It's not a full-course meal, by any means, but Wild Wing is a good place to hang out in a wonderful neighborhood. We were definitely at the, shall we say, upper end of the demographic for this place, but were made to feel welcome. For a light meal or a late-night snack, you could do a whole lot worse.

We stopped in for a quick lunch while hopping on and off our tour bus - not a bad wait - but it was 1:30 - Service was good and waitstaff was prompt with our order. I had potato soup - more like cream gravy with 3 chunks of potato in it - crispy bacon on top was nice touch - Would not order again - Husband had asian salad - that too, was mediocre - but he said the chicken was tasty. Price was okay for what we ordered. If we were Wing eaters I imagine it would have been a better experience as they ARE a wing place and most everybody around us seemed to be enjoying the wings!

“Average food, TERRIBLE service”

We stopped in at the Wild Wing Cafe New Year's Eve 2007 afternoon after taking the historical trolley tour of Savannah. It was about 3:30pm. The restaurant was not very busy and the hostess recommended the second floor. The 4 of us were handed menus, climbed the stairs and sat ourselves as there was no upstairs hostess.

I cannot remember our server's name but he was visibly unenthused to see us. He brought our drinks and we ordered appetizers right away because we were starving. A few minutes later we decided on our entrees and gave him our order.

Here are the entree orders:
Guest 1--Hot dog with fries
Guest 2--Buffalo shrimp
Guest 3--Fried chicken sandwich with fries and bbq sauce on side
Guest 4--Tossed Salad w/ ranch and cheese fries, both without bacon (vegetarian)

The appetizers arrived soon after--veggie quesadilla and onion rings--both arrived hot and were very tasty.

Our server brought our entrees soon after the appetizers but the side of bbq, tossed salad and cheese fries were missing. He told us "he" would be bringing them right away. He must have meant a food runner.

We waited and waited and waited. Eventually the tossed salad and side of bbq arrived. By this time, 2 of us were finished eating, my sandwich had gotten cold waiting on the bbq sauce and our poor vegetarian friend was still starving. As the server put down the salad he apologized for the delay and indicated that the cheese fries would be ready in a minute and mentioned he'd been having to check on things downstairs all day.

We continued to wait for the cheese fries. Our server appeared again to tell us that the kitchen made the cheese fries but forgot to leave off the bacon so they were remaking them. We continued to wait. Finally, after about an hour after ordering them, the cheese fries arrived and weren't even hot! The ranch dressing was mixed in and had turned to soup. The server apologized again and vented to us about his having to run up and down stairs all day for everything. We were not sympathetic.

A few minutes later the manager arrived at our table and apologized. He told us he just heard about the issue 2 minutes prior and told us the kitchen had been short staffed so he had been cooking all day.

The manager did comp our vegetarian's meal and gave the rest of us 50% off. However, he shoudl have been informed as soon as the server realized there was an issue with the order. The manager was working in the kitchen and might have been able to expedite the order. We have never had to wait an hour for cheese fries at a wing house of all places. Because of the delay, we were late hitting the downtown area shops and they were closing early for New Year's Eve.

I do not recommend the Wild Wing Cafe unless you have no other plans for the day and aren't starving.
