Reading the reviews you would think people were writing about two different hotels. Our party rented 4 different rooms, 3 were pool side and 1 was a suite, all on the first floor. None of us were happy with our rooms but the place isn't all bad.
The good: decent location (foget about the pawn shop out front, business was minimal and I felt very safe walking about at night, downtown was straight up Abercorn St. a couple of miles), breakfast was great (hot and cold food, lots of choices), pool area was beautiful, managers reception was nice, the employees were helpful and friendly, the rooms were generous in size and we felt we got a good value for the money ($81).
The bad: other reviews are right about the smell (it was strong), moisture was another huge problem (our clothes always felt damp in the morning when we put them on, swimsuits and towels never dried), carpets in the room and hallways were very dirty and stained (don't walk around in bare feet or white socks), shower was very dark once you pulled the curtain. We only saw one dead cockroach and it was in a hallway and it was there our entire visit.
It looks like they care more about the lobby, pool area and breakfast area and not so much about the rooms. The little things need help: lots of grout is missing around fixtures, soap scum on the fixtures, stains on the carpets, washing machine was broken, light fixtures didn't work, peeling wallpaper). If you're going to stay here I would suggest the second floor (although there is no elevator), it seemed drier.

After all is said and done, if I were to visit this area again, I would not stay in this hotel.

“Big Disappointment”

Clubhouse Inn & Suites Savannah

15 Jun 2008

First of all we were traveling with a group of 29, renting a total of 15 rooms for the week. When we walked into the rooms the smell was horrible. we boarded our bus the next day and went to walmart to buy spray but it didnt help much. The floors were filthy. We had to keep our shoes on the whole time. There was roaches everywhere, in the rooms, in the halls, and around the hot tub. There was a dead roach on the floor of the guest laundry room the whole week we were there. On the plus side, the staff was very friendly. The breakfast was good however we were leary of eating in a place where there are so many roaches. Beware the picture on the brochure is not the same hotel, even though it states Savannah Georgia and has the same address. We were very disappointed and feel we were misled.

I first stayed at the Clubhouse in 2003 and have watch it spiral into a dump. I read one review about the cockroaches, which is true. I saw one going up the wall which was the last straw for me. And there was no exterior working being done to bring them in. The carpets smell and are filthy. My room had a balcony which was filthy and unkemp. The chair was dirty. The sink area had hair from a previous guest.

The clerks at the front desk are so unprofessional. When I arrived my room wasn't ready and I'm waiting for them to tell me how long the wait would be; instead I had to ask with a much condesending response.

The rates may be reasonable, but a heavy price to pay for poor service, unprofessionalism, dirty rooms inside and dirty hallways. Overall it's a dump.

I know new owners are coming in from India and they hired a new manager; but nothing can save this hotel except a bulldozer. And they put holds on my AMEX which lasted for three week after going home. When I called I got the run-around. Messy, just plain messy.

“The Good and the Not-So-Good”

I booked the room (standard queen) through the motel web site for $75.00 (advance purchase). I called the motel's direct line before doing so to inquire about the price and was quoted a rate of $107.00.

I didn't have any problem finding the motel and it's in a decent part of town. There are several dining options within walking distance of the motel, and Abercorn St. takes you straight in to the historic district of Savannah.

The reception at check-in felt a little aloof, but when trying to get to our room one of the employees that ran into us in the hall led us to our room and also carried my bag up the stairs for me. This was very helpful since I was traveling with my 6-year old grandson and I had all of the "stuff" that you have to have when traveling with kids. Just to let you know, he didn't do this for a tip...I wasn't carrying any cash with me and he pretty much opened the door, let us in, said have a good evening and left before I would have been able to offer him a tip.

The room was a standard motel room. The good about the room -- it was clean. The bed linens, the furniture and the carpet were clean. The housekeeping staff must be pretty thorough in their cleaning. There's a coffee maker in the room and the coffee packet offered was actually good and fresh. The not-so-good -- the room lacked adequate lighting (except for the vanity area). The bathroom was so dim that when you pull the shower curtain closed, you're pretty much in the dark. The mattress, in my opinion, wasn't just firm it was hard. I woke up with hip and lower back ache. The pillows leave a lot to be desired, very poor quality. There's no fridge/microwave. The standard room is pretty much a $60.00 room that goes for 75.00 (advance purchase) during Memorial week, and that I would never pay $107.00 for. They do have other rooms, I believe, that have a fridge/microwave and also a balcony or patio. They must be the deluxe rooms or suites.

The manager's reception offered drinks, alcoholic and non-alcholic (I believe a 2 drink limit, which is approriate), and vegetables, dip, crackers and snack mix. The gentleman (who, I'm pretty sure, was not the manager) that took care of the reception, was wonderful. As far as personality goes, the motel has a very good employee in this man. He was just as kind with the children as he was with the adults. Hey, he was good to my grandson, therefore he was good to me!

The breakfast was decent. The hot items were so-so. I believe the eggs were powdered (there was a lot of water in the pan and in the eggs). The sausage was cocktail sausages, not breakfast sausage links. They do have toast, bagels, cereal, waffles and fruit. Also, coffee, juice, tea and milk.

The courtyard area is nice, and the pool area was clean.

This motel, in my opinion, isn't a 3-Star motel, maybe a 2 1/2. They could be a 3-Star if the management would look at the quality of what they offer in their rooms. They already have a few quality employees.

After reading several reviews I was hesitant to stay at the Clubhouse Inn. Ended up calling the manager of the hotel and found that the franchise had been purchased Apr 1. Previous reviews had indicated dirty, not well maintained, dark, unfriendly staff. After talking with the manager I felt the hotel was worth a try. They are going to start a rennovation in the near future.

I am very happy to report that the hotel is clean, adequate to good maintenance, average lighting, friendly staff willing to help wherever and whenever. The hotel is layed out similar to Courtyard by Marriott but I believe a little larger rooms. Towels, etc were good for 3-star hotel. Breakfast was very good (scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, waffles, cereal, etc. Evening managers welcome hour is good with free drinks.

I recommend the hotel as it is good qualty, within 15 minutes of the visitor center and historic district.
