My wife and I stayed at the Marshall House during a 3 day 2 night trip to Savannah (july 26-july 28) and really enjoyed ourselves. Our room was 306, had a view of Broughton Street and was a great value. The 4 post bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows, we also had a refrigerator with water, ironing board, in room safe and robes. Bath and body works products, q-tips and cotton balls were also provided and a nice touch considering these items are often left behind when packing. Our room was very clean and we enjoyed the turn down service (with chocolates), the plentiful clean towels and 2 free newspapers daily.
I didnt notice any noice from the busy street below but maybe thats because the town dies out around 10 or 11pm. A contrast perhaps to a riverfront hotel. We did have a very noisy icemaker our first night and like any hotel, I probably would recommend not staying next to the elevator.
I read so many reviews about this hotel before I booked and breakfast seemed to be a sore spot with some people. Here is the deal. It is a continental breakfast. You have your choices of coffee (real cream not powder) and 3 juices and milk. Buffet choices include 3 cereals, muffins, bagels, biscuits, kiech, breakfast bars and pastries (apple, strawberry, cherry). There was also plenty of seating in both the hotel and atrium.
Between 4-7 there was complimentary wine (Foxhorn) and cheese.
You are a 5 minute walk to the river and to city market and there is a starbucks and ice cream shop a couple doors down. A great
location for most anything. There is a parking garage behind the hotel so you do not have to valet. Remember that lots during the weekday will be full during the day and empty at night. So take advantage of free street parking or the meters during the day and save some money.
If you like Tapas and even if you dont, eat at Jazz'd. Try the Ahi.
Take a trolley tour at the beginning of your trip to help you plan the rest of it. The orange trolley seemed the biggest and best. It had maybe 17 different stops along the way so purchase the unlimited on/off pass so you can get off when you see something you like and get on when the next trolley comes (10 minutes). The tours last 1 1/2 hours and they provide good history and stories. Hint (Different drivers has different stories)
The Ghost tour (same company) was fun too.
I booked my hotel through AAA website and was cheapest by $50 per night (paid $152) over other sites. Perhaps there is a special partnership.
If you are considering Mansion on Forsyth, it is beautiful and pristine but its next to a not as nice section as it is on the edge of the historic district. The trolley does stop there so you can hop aboard (if there is room) and see the sights. Also valet ($20 a night plus tip) looks necessary.
