Stayed at the Heathman for a combination birthday present-anniversary celebration. Paid $259 for a romance package in a one-bedroom suite that included a $50 credit for dining at the Hudson's Bar and Grill situated off the end of the central lobby, a bottle of wine, and rose petals strewn about the room. I made reservations over the telephone, and the staff was quite professional. Although check-in is supposed to be at 4:00pm, we showed up at 1:00 hoping for an early check-in. They were kind enough to let us do this, but we had to forgo the rose petals (no big deal) and pick up the wine and glasses later at the front desk. No bell captain greeted us at the front door, which is okay because we usually shlep our own luggage.
The hotel is situated within a commercial area, but is nicely landscaped and located on a quiet, winding road. However, freeway 500 passes very near one end of the building; we could hear the low rumble of traffic from our room, and I imagine that rooms closer to the highway are worse for traffic noise. The hotel is also located near several strip malls, several large chain restaraunts, and a large shopping mall.
The hotel pool seems on the small side, but the main whirlpool appears to accommodate about 6 people.
The hotel is constructed of large log columns, exposed log beams, big timber posts, a huge stone fireplace, a flagstone floor, and northwest art scattered about, so once you step inside you forget about the outside setting. All of the suites appear to be situated on the 4th floor, which is reserved for "business class". You have to use your room card in the elevator for access to the fourth floor.
I calculated the suite at about 600 square feet, with one half consisting of the living room, fireplace, desk, two-person dining area, and kitchenette with a microwave and small refrigerator (no freezer). The living room contains a sofa and upholstered chair, coffee table, and a 32" LCD television. An air conditioner services the living room. A small balcony from our room overlooked the parking lot. The second half of the room consisted of a king sized bed with the foam Tempur-pedic mattress, another 32" LCD television, a second air conditioner, a closet and sink. Pocket doors separate the bedroom from the living room. A complete selection of pay-per-view movies are available through the LodgeNet movie services. The spacious bathroom contains another sink, a small color television above the sink, toilet, a two-person jacuzzi, and a shower large enough for two people, but only one shower head. The shower head was about half the size of a dinner plate and was kind of cool. The seem quite proud of their shower heads since they even have one on display near the front desk.
As far as noise goes, we could hear the low rumble of the freeway traffic all night long, but it wasn't bad. I would imagine that it is worse on the end of the building facing the freeway. From the living area, we could hear children running up and down the hallways and slamming doors, but not from the bedroom. Speaking of slamming doors, why do people think that it is okay to let self closing doors slam shut with a loud "WHAM"? C'mon, show a little consideration people, and hang on to the handle for two seconds while the door quietly clicks shut. Sorry, just one of my pet peeves. The air conditioner in the bedroom started making a loud clattering noise in the middle of the night, but I could just crank up the unit in the living room to make up for it.
I had never slept in a Tempur-pedic bed before, but it seemed hard to me. Woke up with back pain for the first time in years. Some people swear by the things though. Otherwise the room was great and seems like we received a reasonable bargain, especially when considering the $50 dining credit and bottle of wine. The room was reasonably clean; however, someone had spit something disgusting in the sink and the maid hadn't cleaned it.
Previous reviewers about the coffee are correct; it is horrible!!! Especially for the northwest where we have such good coffee!!. I think it was Tuttle's brand? I believe that they serve the same coffee in the restaurant because it was equally horrid.
When I made reservations for dining in the Hudson's Bar and Grill, I was asked if it was a special occasion, so I told them that it was for our anniversary. So I expected maybe a nice booth for seating? But no, they placed us at a small, two-person table while other couples were placed in booths. I had made reservations about a month before our arrival, so it wasn't because we were last minute guests or anything. Although this is a small thing, it was disappointing. Hudson's is actually a smaller establishment than we expected, but the staff is attentive and efficient. There are some "overflow" tables situated around the fireplace in the central hotel lobby. The restaurant was full and lively while we were there. The food is very good, with some northwest specialties. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Heathman and would probably return, except we would bring our own coffee next time!
