Seeing some of the other reviews, there appears to be some very mixed opinions about this hotel. We loved it. Stayed 3 nights, all on the rivers edge. Upon arrival, our room happened to be right next to some loud party people with a nice large bottle of whiskey on the patio. We wanted nothing to with this and were immediately given a different room. The staff couldn't help us enough - anytime we needed help we were taken care of. Had no problem with shuttles when we needed one, the breakfast buffet was nice and the Chena restaurant was very good. You are in Alaska, I don’t understand why some of the reviews written were disappointed the hotel was not more in the city. This would have been the last thing we wanted. About the only thing I can say, is try to get a room away from the bridge. Some reviews mention the noise factor, but our first night was in one of the condo units near the bridge and restaurant, but we had no noise bother us during the night and I am a very light sleeper. No complaints at all. Also, the flowers were fantastic.

We stayed here one night & for the most part enjoyed our stay.
Cons:
1. We booked and were charged for a river front cabin...
though our cabin was on the water it was a duplex with a shared patio and neither the patio door nor window faced the river. We had to insist that the charge for the 'river front' was removed.

2. We dined at Chenas (on the property) and were not impressed with the food or service. I am not sure if the restaurant and hotel are affiliated.

3. We would have liked to have more of an a la carte menu instead of a buffet for breakfast.

Pros:
1. The location worked well for us as we were doing the morning Riverboat and it was not only close but the shuttle from the hotel provided our transportation.

2. The room was very bright and clean.

3. The grounds were very well manicured with lovely flowers everywhere.

4. The staff was friendly and helpful.

This place really wasn't what we expected based on the information provided by the travel agency. The exterior of the cottages and landscaping is lovely but the inside of the cottages is outdated and the bathroom is terribly small. The cottages were clean and the staff was friendly . There is no baggage assistance. The shuttle was waiting for us when we arrived by train with our keys and room assignment. However, shuttles are pretty scarce unless they are going to a scheduled tour. We had to pay $20 each way for a cab ride to the shopping / restaurant district. It is not a good location and I wouldn't want to be there again without a rental car. Our first morning there, we ate breakfast in the lodge which was $12 per person hot breakfast buffet and was clearly the most horrible food we had on our whole trip. I tried everything on the buffet and never found anything I could eat except the fruit and cold cereal. After that, we didn't want to try to only restaurant there for any other meals.

We stayed at the Rivers Edge Resort in Fairbanks as part of a Princess cruise tour. We were disappointed at first that we weren't going to be staying at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside, but we were charmed by the cute and cozy individual cottages that were spread out over the property and along the Chena River. Each cottage had two beds, a small sitting area and a small patio with chairs in the back. Each cottage had a beautiful and colorful hanging basket which really brightened the property.

We had one of the best meals in Alaska at Chena's on the property. Everything was prepared and served very well. It was almost unbelievable to be sitting out on the deck at almost 11:00 PM with the sun right in our eyes!

Although there is not a lot to do in Fairbanks itself (aside from the tours provided by the cruise line which were just OK), we enjoyed our stay at Rivers Edge Resort and should we ever pass through Fairbanks again, we would definitely stay again.

“do not go there--you will regret”

Rivers Edge Resort and Cottage

4 Jul 2007

Do not stay at this cottage. It is far away from the city center and they do not really provide free shuttle when you need it. They promised internet access but it was not working. The cottage is by the Chena river and it was noisy. The bus driver complained a lot. I have the worse experience in dining in their restaurant. The computer in the cashier did not work and we were asked to wait till it was backed up-- when it was already past 11pm. The head waitress Kara was rude and accused us by saying" we cannot offer free foods" . I complained it to the management but was not satisfactorily resolved. This is the most unpleasant part of our otherwise great trip to Alaska. I wished I had read the reviews posted here earlier before the trip. Do not make my mistake again.
