“Strange but fills a need quite adequately”

Yes, the Sophie Station is a bit strange if you don't understand that it was built as apartments for pipeline workers. But who wouldn't want a two-room suite with a kitchen? It is conveniently located near two markets, so you can pick up some essentials for breakfast or snacks. And it's within minutes of the Riverboat trip (if that's on your intinerary). If you want to do laundry, buy tokens at the desk, and get some detergent from the nearby store.
The exercise center was in pristine condition (even if the early morning porters spent an inordinate amount of time watching my wife exercise!). The hotel even found the clothes I left behind in a drawer and mailed them back to me.
Sophie Station--convenient, clean, big rooms.

Spent one night here on a Celebrity cruisetour. The rooms are in the front building of a multi-building apartment complex
originally built for the pipeline workers and refitted as a hotel. They're one-bedroom mini-suites with a full kitchen and more than enough space. No problem using this hotel for an extended stay if you're so inclined. TV in the bedroom and the living room sitting area. The living room couch is a convertible if you need an extra bed.
There's a restaurant on the premises and a decent burger and brew joint (Brewsters) about 2 blocks away, across from a
Fred Meyer megastore. There's also a Safeway supermarket that has great sandwiches and wraps at the deli counter, as well as everything else you need if you wanna make use of the kitchen
during your stay.
Nice staff, clean and extremely comfortable place to stay.
Sophie's got my vote!

I stayed here as part of an aurora tour.

The rooms are great -- they're in a one-bedroom apartment style, with a full kitchen and small living room in addition to the bedroom. My room was very clean and well appointed. The wireless internet worked fine.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Food at the restaurant was very good. Grocery shopping is just a few blocks away.

Unfortunately the aurora did not cooperate on my trip, but the hotel does offer an aurora wakeup call in case of an active aurora.

The suites are large and very well appointed. The complete kitchen with full-size appliances was a great way to enjoy breakfasts, restaurant leftovers, and cold wine whenever it was convenient. They even provided a corkscrew! A large 24-hour supermarket down the block was very handy.

The Univeristy of Alaska campus is a five minute drive away, as is the airport. For me, this worked very well.

I particularly liked the enormous clothes closet. It was about 8 feet
long. I wish some expensive hotel chains would follow suit. The staff
were quite pleasant and helpful.

The only downside was the facility felt a little old. I remember it first opened about 25 years ago. While the hotel has obviously been kept up, perhaps it's getting time for fresh paint to brighten things
a bit. Of course, if I were staying during the midnight sun summer, things would be plenty bright already.

I would definitely stay again.

We stayed 2 nights at SS, as it was part of our Royal Caribbean Alaskan land tour 1st hotel. We were very impressed with the staff and accommodations. Our room consisted of a living room with sofa, chair, TV , tables and sliding door to a private balcony. The view was very nice as we faced out the side of the hotel that had all the Pine and Aspen trees (park like setting)...and the trees were changing colors. We had a separate bedroom with a king bed, dresser, TV, chair and 2 n/s. A very clean and long makeup area with sink and eminities. Ajoining room housed a tub/shower and toliet. What was so nice was having a nice clean kitchen with full size appliances. Came in handy for storing drinks in frig and cooking our pizza's...lol.
There was a small area as you entered the suite that had a open clothes closet, desk with internet hook-up....this area was all opened and adjacent to the kitchen which flowed into the LR. the suite was exceptionally clean and very well appointed, and clean carpet.
We ate at the restaurant our first night and i must say the food was outstanding! We each (4 of us) had Salmon and Flounder with salads and veggies...no room for dessert...lol. The portions were emnorous in size, and I couldn't eat all of mine. The waitress was attenative and the whole staff was pleasant and very helpful.
If we go back to Fairbanks, this is where we will stay, as the accommodations were all that you needed for an extended stay. As one poster stated. A grocery store and shopping, Taco Bell, and other restaurants were within 1 block from the hotel.

One thing. The flowers outside the hotel were absolutely awesome! I've never seen flowers so huge in size and so colorful. One petunia flower was as big as the palm of my hand...that's no lie!
We give this hotel a 4.5 star rating. The grounds & buildings were perfect and well taken care of...and the staff was friendly and very helpful. Plus, you had FREE access by a complimentary computer to the internet. It was stationed right by the front doors. Nothing like emailing back home to the lower 48 from Fairbanks, AK....our grandkids love it.

I'm sure there were other hotels that were just as nice according to others views. But, you won't go wrong staying at Sophie Station.

    • Disliked — nothing really
    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Enjoy Alaska and all it has to offer. It's definitely God created and words can't explain the beauty.!
