We arrived in Fairbanks after several days in Seattle, in preparation to just over a week of inland Alaska prior to boarding a ship in Seward to begin a cruise down to Vancouver.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by some very nice folks at the front desk. We did arrive late morning, so I wasn't surprised when they said our room wasn't ready, however they were "putting a housekeeper in there right now". With that, they picked up a 2-way radio and spoke to the head housekeeper.
Our room was on the first floor, on the wing to the right of the front desk. While we were waiting for the room to be readied, I asked them if they had self-service laundry facilities, which they did. I purchased the tokens ($1 each to wash and dry) and started a load of laundry. Before our clothes were dry our room was ready. Our room was 1/2 the length of the hall from the laundry room, so I could check on things drying easily. The room was appearing a bit dated, however things were clean and fresh smelling. A very nice feature was the kitchenette. Toaster, microwave, full oven/cooktop and a full size fridge at temperature was waiting us. The kitchenette had a bar style eating area adjoining the living room The bedroom and large bath were separated by a door, spitting the spaces. There was a small wall air conditioner in the bedroom portion only. The way the placement was done, it is apparent this was an after-thought to accommodate days of warmer weather with travelers that are accustomed to a/c. We used the a/c, as it was a bit warm during our stay and I like it cooler at nights when I sleep. The beds were comfortable and the vanity area had a large running counter with the bath facilities at it's far end.
The Hotel runs frequent shuttles around the "Circle" (where the Salmon Bake and the Musical Revue are held, along with many gift shops and eateries).
The hotel's on site restaurant provided a lovely afternoon/early evening meal.
I then walked back to the nearest "commercial corner", which is a nice 8-10 minute stroll. There is a Fred Myers (compare it to a Super Wal-Mart, except with friendly people & better quality items) on one side of the street (along with a Taco Bell, for all those that travel to Alaska and can't live without their dose of Cal-Mex fast food. Across the street is a Super Market (maybe Krogers, I don't recall the name)
The rooms are sizable, quiet, comfortable and clean. Yes, they could use a bit of freshing,
But they really met all our needs and the staff was more than helpful.
There is a complimentary use of high speed internet at a computer near the front desk.

“Strange but fills a need quite adequately”

Yes, the Sophie Station is a bit strange if you don't understand that it was built as apartments for pipeline workers. But who wouldn't want a two-room suite with a kitchen? It is conveniently located near two markets, so you can pick up some essentials for breakfast or snacks. And it's within minutes of the Riverboat trip (if that's on your intinerary). If you want to do laundry, buy tokens at the desk, and get some detergent from the nearby store.
The exercise center was in pristine condition (even if the early morning porters spent an inordinate amount of time watching my wife exercise!). The hotel even found the clothes I left behind in a drawer and mailed them back to me.
Sophie Station--convenient, clean, big rooms.

Spent one night here on a Celebrity cruisetour. The rooms are in the front building of a multi-building apartment complex
originally built for the pipeline workers and refitted as a hotel. They're one-bedroom mini-suites with a full kitchen and more than enough space. No problem using this hotel for an extended stay if you're so inclined. TV in the bedroom and the living room sitting area. The living room couch is a convertible if you need an extra bed.
There's a restaurant on the premises and a decent burger and brew joint (Brewsters) about 2 blocks away, across from a
Fred Meyer megastore. There's also a Safeway supermarket that has great sandwiches and wraps at the deli counter, as well as everything else you need if you wanna make use of the kitchen
during your stay.
Nice staff, clean and extremely comfortable place to stay.
Sophie's got my vote!

I stayed here as part of an aurora tour.

The rooms are great -- they're in a one-bedroom apartment style, with a full kitchen and small living room in addition to the bedroom. My room was very clean and well appointed. The wireless internet worked fine.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Food at the restaurant was very good. Grocery shopping is just a few blocks away.

Unfortunately the aurora did not cooperate on my trip, but the hotel does offer an aurora wakeup call in case of an active aurora.

The suites are large and very well appointed. The complete kitchen with full-size appliances was a great way to enjoy breakfasts, restaurant leftovers, and cold wine whenever it was convenient. They even provided a corkscrew! A large 24-hour supermarket down the block was very handy.

The Univeristy of Alaska campus is a five minute drive away, as is the airport. For me, this worked very well.

I particularly liked the enormous clothes closet. It was about 8 feet
long. I wish some expensive hotel chains would follow suit. The staff
were quite pleasant and helpful.

The only downside was the facility felt a little old. I remember it first opened about 25 years ago. While the hotel has obviously been kept up, perhaps it's getting time for fresh paint to brighten things
a bit. Of course, if I were staying during the midnight sun summer, things would be plenty bright already.

I would definitely stay again.
