We spent three nights over Thanksgiving in the Log House at the taste of Alaska Lodge Lodge. The facility could not have been nicer or more cozy. It is roughly 30 minutes from the airport, and easy to find in good weather. In bad weather it might take a little more time. It is out of town and away from light pollution though there is clearly light in the distance. It is not enough to distract.
Cory (son of the owners) kept the refrigerator stocked with food, juice and snacks, and the cabin lacked for nothing. In spite of -20 degree temperatures, the hand built cabin was warm and snug. The window facing their glen provided a limited view of the Auroras, but to really observe them you need to hike out into the field and face the cabin.
Cooper, the resident dog, visited regularly and came along when we hiked the property Thanksgiving morning. It's a great property, and the views are spectacular.
There is a master bedroom downstairs, as well as the second bedroom with twin beds. There is also an indoor jacuzzi downstairs, plus a sink and a second half bath. The oil heater sits at the base of the stairs and kept the cabin cozy around the clock.
There is an extension cord to plug into your car block heater overnight.
Highly recommended for a quiet, authentic getaway in the unique landscape of remote Alaska. it's close enough to town to get what you need, but far enough away to see the sky fully. And the hosts are just splendid people.
They provide wireless internet access so you can fire up and work in a hand built cabin, in -20 degree weather with no other homes or people in sight - if that suits you.
Very mellow, very well done.
