We just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Alaska. Because of the way we planned our itinerary, our stay began and ended with nights in Fairbanks. Both nights were booked 6 months in advance at the Westmark, Fairbanks, touted as the best place to stay in Fairbanks. Both nights that we stayed there were horrendous. We are a family of 4 and requested a double room. The first night they could not give us a double room, but gave us 2 rooms with Kings, okay no big deal, but they were in opposite wings of the hotel! And the wings only connect by going outside in the parking lot. Arriving at midnight and trying to divide up toothpaste and soap in the lobby of the hotel was a nightmare. We spoke to the desk clerk the next morning and he assured us that upon our return we would have a double room. Guess what, not only did they not have a double room, they didn't have any rooms! They had to book us in the Westmark Inn, an inferior property. We've come to find out that the hotel chain is owned by Holland America cruises, and if a cruise group is in they get first dibs. They pretty much treated us like dirt. So stay away. Instead stay at the brand new Marriott property just opened in January 2001. Wish we had!
