If you come to Fairbanks to see the Ice Sculpture World Championship, stay at the Comfort Inn because it is right next door and within walking distance. It's a few miles from the airport and the train station and they have shuttle service to both. Downtown is a few miles away also. We got a car because we wanted to drive up in the hills to see the Aurora Borealis and to North Pole Alaska to see the tourist stuff and to see Fairbanks downtown including the cute little Fairbanks community and musher museum on 5th street and Cushman. You can probably get transportation to each of these if you don't want to get a car. We saw a busload of people waiting at our northern lights viewing spot at midnight.
The motel is a little worn, but the rooms are larger than normal, the beds were comfortable and there is a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in each room. The breakfast is the standard waffles and bagels fare.
The ice sculptures are absolutely unbelievable!! If you come the week after the Iditarod start in Anchorage you can see the completed single-block scultures and see the multi-block teams carving their entries.
