Everyone should take advantage of the rare opportunity to walk across a famous bridge. The walkway is pretty cool as most of it is wooden. It is divided in half - one side for cyclists and the other for pedestrians. The cars are on either side of you at first, but eventually they are completely underneath the walkway.
We walked across on a Monday afternoon, and there were tons of people going both ways.
We rode the subway to City Hall and found the entrance to the Bridge easily marked by signs. City Hall is an amazing building to see as well.
Once across the bridge, take the first set of stairs down and walk underneath the bridge and down to the water. If you're hungry, Grimaldi's Pizza is on the way to the water. It's a small place with amazing pizza. There is also an ice cream shop down by the water.
We had no trouble hailing a taxi from underneath the bridge. But there is also a subway station close by.
If you walk back across at night, you'll get an awesome view of Manhattan in lights. We learned this when our limo driver took us back to this same spot. He told us to walk as far as possible into the right-hand corner of the railing by the water and we could see the Statue of Liberty. She looked magnficent lit up! The entire scene was breathtaking!
