Rugby Gardens was exactly what I needed for a local, affordable accommodation in Brooklyn. The neighborhood is lovely, near the park with small shops near by. I was free to come and go as I pleased and Michael and Susan were extremely helpful, non-intrusive, pleasant people. Breakfast was substantial with many choices. There are 2 rooms on the 3rd floor, one with a double bed and a larger room with a queen bed. There is a need for a good reading lamp next to or over the bed. Travel lightly as it is a trek up the stairs with a heavy suitcase! A hair drier was in the room as was a TV and DVD player with several movies available. The bathroom was shared and well supplied with lotions, cotton balls, nice soaps and shampoo/conditioner in the shower. I had the floor to myself except for 2 nights. The other guest and I never met and I slept in as I sensed she had to get up and out. My last night was very cold, no heat, but there was a down comforter on the bed and a heavy spread. Loud clanking and banging pipes serenaded me very early in the morning. Cabs did not appear to be easy to find in the neighborhood but one night I did call a car service which charged about $1/block of driving. The cab fare from La Guardia was $42 including tip. Get directions from Susan prior to leaving so that the cabbie doesn't take you for a ride! The subway is only a few blocks away.

I highly recommend Rugby Gardens.

Vibrant, walkable neighborhood; a block from subway, food coop, many storefront restaurants; comfortable old house; helpful hosts. Definitely recommended!

“Brooklyn Charm”

Rugby Gardens

16 Jan 2008

Just as they say, Rugby Gardens was for us a home away from home. The decor was comfortable, clean, colorful, eclectic, fresh. The rooms were just the right size. Hosts Sue and Michael were friendly, generous with advice, and completely respectful of our privacy. No trouble parking. We were expecting street noise, but amazingly, there was none. The walk to Prospect Park just down the street was an added bonus - what fascinating architecture along the way! Commuting via public transportation between Brooklyn and Manhattan on weekends can be complicated, but with the proper guidance, anyone should be able to do it. We will recommend Rugby Gardens to others and hope to return ourselves for future adventures, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Hubby and I stayed at Rugby gardens for 3 nights in September 07. We must echo the comments made by other guests, Rugby Gardens is a wonderful and accommodating place to stay. Sue and Michael are tremendous hosts who are informative, hospitable and entertaining without being obtrusive. The location is also a plus, Rugby Gardens is located on a tree lined street which is full of 'old world' charm. Manhattan is available via the Q line train which is a 2 minute stroll away and Prospect Park (a smaller version of Central Park) is just down the street. As avid joggers we found this to be a brilliant place to exercise or simply stroll. In sum we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have no hesitation recommending Rugby Gardens.

if you are going to stay in brooklyn, this is a fine b&b to stay at. located a short walk from the Q subway, it is convenient to get to and from. the two rooms are up on the top floor and are roomy enough (2 adults+13 year old) and very quiet. breakfast is continental, but more than enough variety (and quantity) for anyone and the coffee was good and endless.

internet service was great, entry was easy (our own keys). information on sites, routes and history was forthcoming from sue and mike.

do note that you are in a quiet brooklyn neighborhood-- not surrounded by bars, over priced eateries and endless bustle-- for some, including our family, that was a good thing. all those things were just minutes away via the subway, cabs or car services. prospect park is a 10 minute walk through this lovely area. manhattan (mid-town) was about a 45 minute subway ride on the Q-- $2 door to door.
