“scary place”

Quality Inn Brooklyn

26 Nov 2008 New

hotel is in the middle of nowhere. police car permantly on the corner of the road outside the hotel and around the corner near the subway, this in itself is quite unerving. hotel staff told us not to go walking about and that we were safe from the hotel two blocks to the subway i'm guessing this was due to the police presence.
dont plan on getting any sleep whatsoever as the rooms are adjacent to the train line and the trains run every 15 mins 24/7 and are very loud.
the dining room has two tables and seven chairs so to sit and eat breakfast is virtually impossible and our tea and coffee making facilities in our room did not work ,neither did the heating.
it was only four dollars for the train but took a good 40 mins to get in the centre, and coming back we took a cab which cost 50 dollars and took 30 mins, this budget choice is then no longer cheap and takes up about 1hour 30mins a day travelling which is a waste of your hoilday time. also bcause of the cost and the time we couldnt come back to the hotel to change and freshen up before going out in the evening so we had to stay out all day and night. new york is fantastic and even more so as we found out when we checked out of this hotel after three nights and stayed in manhatten.

I have never ever before stayed at a hotel with such a bad service! We were with a group of 4, booked 2 rooms online and got 2 rooms confirmed, but there was only one room available upon arrival (after an 10H flight). Instead of helping to find a solution, the hotel manager was rude and unhelpful.

I would never recommand this hotel to anyone!

“GOOD AND BAD, Read on -”

There is a MAJOR advantage and a MAJOR disadvantage to Quality Inn Brooklyn.

+ ADVANTAGE: Try finding a hotel in Manhattan - or even Brooklyn these days - for $125 a night.
- DISADVANTAGE : The train noise

I liked the newness of the hotel, the room was very clean, the bed and pillows comfortable, the breakfast fine (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit and bread/pastries), and free computer in the lobby. In Manhattan, the room would go for $250 or higher (although I know prices can vary wildly there.)

Two blocks away is the Broadway stop subway, with any line you want into Manhattan. It is about a 25-minute ride. The station itself is not "Park Ave", but not as scary as some have written.
It is about the same level of safety as any other. The 2 block walk to the hotel at any time of day or night was quick and I felt, safe.

The major downside is the noise from the trains; I felt like I was in Alvy Singer's boyhood house under the Coney Island roller coaster in ANNIE HALL. But strangely, it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, just before I was falling asleep, and then pretty early in the morning.

Two small details: the bed they call a queen is really a fullsize; and once the maid had left our door open 1" because the
door-closer-thing didn't pull it shut all the way.

Figure if the savings is worth it; if not, then definitely go and stay
in Manhattan.

“Do not stay in the basement of this hotel.”

Quality Inn Brooklyn

20 Aug 2008

I stayed in this hotel on a budget. They put me in the basement, felt like the trains from the bypass next door were running right through my room. Couldn't sleep and had to take the NY state bar exam the next morning. At 10pm, I went to the manager to beg him to change my room, he informed me that my undergroung room, was the quietest in the entire hotel??!!
At 1am, still couldn't sleep, I went back to find a hotel staff who would be kind enough to change my room. This time, I met a lady named Iris, she moved me to a 6th floor room, much quieter, but after all that hassel, I got only two hours sleep BEFORE A MAJOR EXAM!! The new room cost $179 while the one underground cost $139 - perhaps the Indian/ Pakistani manager thought I couldn't afford to pay the difference so, he banished me to the basement.
Although this was my worst EVER hotel experience, much worse than in Naples, Italy - I observed that the rooms were lovely and clean and the staff quite nice - even the Indian/ Pakistani manager!!!

The plan was to stay in Manhattan for a few nights around New Year's Eve, but that was before we found out it was one of the most expensive weeks of the year!! Most hotels were well over $300/night and many were already booked solid (and we thought three months notice was enough!) We decided to stay in Brooklyn, but not knowing the city at all, just made sure it was a hotel close to the subway with pretty decent reviews and a good price. We chose the Quality Inn and it was a fairly good experience. It was a little daunting at first when we couldn't find the hotel right away (there should be a sign visible from the subway station). The check-in staff could have smiled, but once we arrived in our room we were pleased. It was a fairly small room but had a VERY comfy king-sized bed and a lovely bathroom with hot water and excellent water pressure. Our room was actually in the basement on the road side, but we couldn't hear a thing at night. The area seems perfectly safe in the daylight, but we were a little nervous at night. It seems like a waste to take a cab from the subway (it's less than 3 blocks) but it's better safe than sorry. I don't think the area is actually too bad, but there were always a lot of cops around and "thug" type men hanging around, not to mention the stories you hear about NY that made us feel slightly on edge.
