The last two nights on our 12-day Glacier/Waterton Lakes National Parks adventure were spent in cabin #10 at Apgar Village Lodge near West Glacier. The cabin was very cozy, had two double beds, a kitchen table and cooking/eating supplies including a coffee maker. It was extremely quiet. And yes...it did have a TV that only got one station on rabbit ears. They said it would get 4 stations, but it really didn’t matter to us. After all, we were without TV for the previous 10 days and were glad to be away from it. Who needed TV with the vistas we had? The view right outside the picture window was of McDonald Creek. Ask for cabin #7, 8, 10, 11, 12 or 22 since they are right on McDonald Creek. The other cabins don’t have the view these do. The people working the front desk were very friendly. Everything in Apgar (which isn’t much except gift shops) is within walking distance. The West Glacier gifts shops are just a few miles away. Apgar Village is at the beginning of the Going-to-the-Sun Road which was closed on September 16 for a bridge replacement and road repairs which we knew ahead of time by looking at www.NPS.com so we travelled it at the beginning of our trip. We also drove up the west side of Lake McDonald toward Lodgepole, MT from Apgar until the road turned to gravel and got a real close up view of what the 2003 fire did. There’s really not much to do around Apgar, but we pretty much saw everything the previous 10 days so we were ready to relax. Another nice thing about Apgar is that it is less than an hour from Glacier International Airport in Kalispell in this off-season traffic, allowing us to be lazy on our last day and still get to our 2pm flight home.

“World's Tiniest Shower”

Apgar Village Lodge

23 Jul 2007

These comments only apply to cabin # 53, where I stayed for three nights in late June.

The most obvious shortcoming was the world's tiniest shower. Barely enough room to turn around in. And I'm not that big or tall. Anyone over about 5' 10" would have to bend over with their rear outside the shower in order to wash their hair. Even though there is cabinet space to the side of the shower stall that could easily have been used to put in a good tub/shower combination. Also, the ceiling in the bathroom is several inches lower than the rest of the cabin.

Room has 3/4 of a full bed, small desk, three chairs, and small TV. Area only receives four stations via antenna on TV, but only two of those (ABC, NBC) were accessible even when fiddling with rabbit ears on set. The area is quiet (they make that clear to you when you check in, with a mantra something along the lines of "no parties, no pets, no loud noises", etc. They repeated this line to everybody who checked in. And it was quiet at night.

This unit is behind and between two other cabins. Does not have kitchen facilities. Housekeeping did a good job.

Warning: there are picnic tables scattered around the lodge, but covered with pine sap so put something down on the bench before sitting or your clothes will be "tarred" with sap.

One morning woke up to the smell of a skunk. Later the smell drifted away but when I came back in late afternoon it was back. So apparently a skunk resides in the area.

“Rustic cabins OK”

Apgar Village Lodge

We spent 3 nights in the Apgar cabins in early July. They're definitely rustic, but I suppose that goes along with the Glacier experience. All of the cabins appeared to be well shaded and very close to the conveniences of the little Apgar village. The cabins are also a very short walk to a simply spectacular view of Lake MacDonald!

Our cabin had a queen sized (firm, not too comfy) bed, a small kitchen (of which we only used the fridge), and a tiny bathroom. There was plenty of hot water and the baseboard heating worked well. There's no A/C and I could definitely see this being an issue if the temp climbed above 85-90 during the day. Thankfully, it never got beyond 80 while we were there. Our TV received *no* stations - which in the end was fine. We had books to read in the evening and thus spent 3 days completely cut off from the troubles of the world!

Glacier itself was definitely an extraordinary trip and I can't wait to return! Next time, we might try the Lake MacDonald Lodge (further into the park) or even the Apgar Village Motel (which sits directly on the lake and has one of the most extraordinary views of any hotel / motel in the world!). The Village Motel looked pretty "no frills" - but those views...!

With regards to food... You could cook in the cabin kitchen, though that might be more work than it's worth. There's a restaurant in Apgar called Eddie's - which in our 3 experiences proved quite dismal each time. In general, all of our eating experiences around Glacier were blah, but then again it's Glacier - not NYC.

The cabins are certainly doable, but if you're not into rustic - you might try elsewhere.

“Lock up ALL your stuff - things go missing”

Cabins are nice inside, but bathroom is TERRIBLY small - you'll have to step into the kitchen to dry off. Very few plugs. They should do away with the kitchens and provide a little more seating - there is only one (dirty) chair besides the wooden dining chairs in a cabin that sleeps four adults. No salt and pepper provided in kitchen - no microwave. No AC, and they need it in June. When it rains (a lot) there isn't any place to sit except at the kitchen table or on the beds.
Lock up ALL your stuff. We were on a 8-day trip and stayed in 6 different hotels and this is the only place where we "lost" stuff. One item I missed immediately - a makeup bag I left on our dining table when we went to eat at the local restaurant. It was gone later that evening. Also, I accidentally left two brand-new bras hanging from the light fixture in the bedroom when we left (drying) and I emailed them immediately that next night, but they were never found. Who would want such stuff? I really hated to lose that bag - it had an expensive compact and some irreplaceable items totaling about $100. The bras were worth about $60 total, so I would call it a very expensive place to stay. I won't return.

“Fabulous location, nice little cabins”

We have stayed in these wonderful cabins 4 times and have reservations again for this summer. The location on the west side of Glacier National Park is ideal. It is actually in the Park itself and on the shore of beautiful Lake McDonald. Each cabin is a little different but they all have comfortable beds, adequate bathroom and a small kitchen. We usually eat breakfast at the cabin, pack a lunch and then leave for hiking/exploring Glacier National Park during the daytime. We usually return late afternoon and eat dinner out in one of the nearby restaurants. It is a good value as the kitchens allow us to eat some of our meals there. The lodges in Glacier are historic and great places to stay but have no rooms with kitchens so all meals must be eaten out. We come to Glacier NP often so like the option of being able to fix some of our meals ourselves. The cabins we have always found to be clean and the location next to the lake is ideal. Being individual cabins tends to be a little quieter than motel room that share walls with other people. There are no phones in the cabins but there are pay phones nearby and we do find that we have cell phone service there. The television gets only one channel clearly but who wants to watch TV when you're in a place like Glacier National Park anyway. Overall, we really enjoy staying in these cabins and recommend them very highly.
