I've been to alot of places and this ranks up there with some of the best scenery I've seen. This is a "must go" place. As far as the lodge the food was great. It was my best eating i've ever had. The chef was amazing, I even gained nine pounds in 5 days. Staff was great and very organized and gave great advice. All of our fishing experiences were great and very personalized. i saw whales, dolphins, black bear, brown bear, and the list goes on.

“The Alaskan Experience”

Glacier Bay Country Inn

An AMAZING Alaskan Experience.
Accommodations were extremely clean and comfortable. Both the lodge and the small cabins are beautiful and have a cozy bed and breakfast feel. The property is kept beautifully clean and is nestled in the middle of the Gustavus southeast Alaskan rain forest with beautiful meadows of wild flowers on one side and thick green mossy woods on the other. Absolutely beautiful!
The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. The hostess was especially sweet and very helpful in keeping us on our schedule for our planned activities each day. The staff was always to be found and always looking to help make us comfortable.
The food was absolutely incredible!! The first night we arrived we had the most amazing dinner and that continued throughout every night of our trip! Every breakfast included hot breakfast of some type as well as fresh fruit and other options as well. Lunches were conveniently packed for us to take along on our planned daily activities and always included a delicious sandwich on fresh baked bread and snacks as well.
Gustavus is THE place for an Alaskan experience. Its is a tiny town with one road and less than 200 residents and only accessible by boat or plane. It is incredibly beautiful and there is some much to do. We went fishing with guides on a fishing boat in the bay and caught enough Halibut to last us through the rest of the year! Another day another friendly guide took us up mud river fly fishing and were caught and released big dolly vartons all day long and hiked through some beautiful back country landscapes.
The day cruise up Glacier Bay was great too. We were able to see lots of wildlife including, tons of different birds, sea lions, sea otters, lots of humpback whales, lots of bald eagles, brown bears, black bears, and mountain goats. We were able to watch the glacier as pieces cracked and fell into the ocean. Its was a great experience.
Overall this was a trip that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

“Pros and Cons”

Pros: Dinners were good and afternoon tea was enjoyable with home-baked goodies. Owners are organzied about getting people where they need to be when they need to be there. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Setting is lovely.

Cons: Breakfast is very plain, not what I'd expect from a B&B in this price range. (Scrambled eggs with no herbs or anything to make them other than diner-style plain, bacon). Bag lunch was very plain (ham sandwich on plain bread, bag of chips, candy bar) and quite random. Even things that would be easy to let people choose were not choices - eg. an apple or orange, diet or regular soda - you just got a random bag.

I would not consider the hostess as a "people person." For example, when she said, "You could take a cab" and a guest asked "How much would that be?" her standard reply was, "I haven't the faintest idea." If I were running an inn I'd make it my business to have some idea! She got quite annoyed at a "high maintenance" guest (though not to her face.)

The complimentary bicycles were rusty old clunkers with no gears, seat height adjustment not working, chain came off about once a mile. When we mentioned the bike could use some work before someone else had the same unpleasant experience there was no apology.

Pro or con as you take it: This is not the sort of B&B where the owners like to chat with the guests, ask how their day was, make individual suggestions of activities based on their interests. If you like the more privacy oriented style of B&B this wouldn't be a con for you. If you enjoy social interaction with your hosts (maybe you're curious about what it's like to live in a place where you have to get on a plane to go grocery shopping?) it could be.

Hosts are very gracious. Go out of there way to make you feel at home. When a problem, it was resolved in less time than it took us to finish dinner. Cooking is absolutely superb with great dinners and breakfasts. Steve, the chef, is funny, friendly and generous.
All of the staff treat you well and very promptly deliver you to activities and meet you promptly at completion. The rooms are well furnished and very comfortable. For anyone planning a trip to Alaska, visit Gustavus and Glacier Bay. You cannot pick abetter spot than the Glacier Bay Country Inn.

Great people very friendly. Accomadations were better than I expected. They customize your vacation to fit your needs if you want to be on the go or if you just want to lay back and relax. The food was also top notch. I will go there next time I am in Gustavus.
