The Bear Track Inn is a lovely lodge. We stayed there for three nights in July and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
Getting to the lodge is half the fun. Janie arranged our flight from Juneau, and the trip across the channel and through the pass on the small plane was absolutely beautiful. Janie and Bob met us at the Gustavus airport and drove us the six miles to the lodge.
Constructed of Sitka spruce logs, the building itself is spectacular. The large comfortable common area has huge windows and is filled with cushy furniture and a variety of books, puzzles and games to enjoy while relaxing. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the entire property was clean and neat.
While the food was good, it wasn't gourmet, and they charged extra for wine with dinner, which we thought should have been included for the premium price we paid for our stay.
We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the lodge, which is at the end of the (very bumpy) road, providing a nicely secluded setting. There aren't a lot of activities at the lodge itself, but there are many good tours which they will book for you. Transportation for all tours booked through the lodge is provided. The lodge also packs box lunches for guests to take on their tours.
The staff was wonderful at meeeting each guest's individual needs and arranging tours.
I did think the price was quite high, but if you want to escape the cruise crowd in Alaska these days, you want to stay somewhere like Bear Track. It's a very attractive property with a great staff and comfortable accommodations.
