“Beautiful Canyon, But the Tour Stinks”

Antelope Canyon

Photographed and made popular by talented photographers, such as Peter Licht and David Muench, Antelope Canyon now attracts hundreds of daily visitors. The canyon’s popularity supports 3 or more small businesses operated out of Page Arizona and owned by the Navajo Tribe. The tour costs $20.00 to $50.00, including transportation to and from the canyon and takes 1.5 – 2 hours. Considering that you will spend about 20 minutes traveling and waiting for your turn to enter the canyon, your Antelope Canyon experience will run over $27.00 / hour.

As serious photographers, my brother and I signed up for the $50.00 - photographers’s tour which was touted to begin when the lighting was perfect and would include fewer people. Since we would arrive before the sun’s ray penetrated the canyon, we took tripods to shoot time exposures. We traveled to the canyon in a modified flat bed truck that held about 10 photographers. When we arrived at the canyon, I counted 12 of these trucks parked near the canyon’s entrance. Immediately, I knew that it would be impossible to set up tripod in a narrow canyon where a hundred or more people were scrambling about. So I used a monopod and kicked the ASA up to 800.

We were instructed to stay with our group leader as she rushed us through the Canyon. I had no time to compose my photographs or even take exposure readings. Whenever I lingered, the leader of the group behind me urged me to move on. The entire tour – from entrance to exit – took about 15 minutes after which we were given another 15 minutes on our own. During this time I managed to get a few decent shots, but to do so I had to meander through swarms of people whose arms, legs and faces littered most of my photographs.

The pressure of having to constantly move and shoot photos on the fly made our visit to Antelope Canyon more like a sporting event rather than the tranquil, leisurely experience that we had expected. If you happen to be in Page Arizona and have nothing better to do, you may want to visit Antelope Canyon. Otherwise, the trip is not worth it.

“Never again with a Native guided tour company.”

The Native guide on our tour was unbelievably rude during the entire visit. She would not let people in her group take pictures anywhere they chose. And on three occasions she actually took cameras away from tourists, and snapped photos herself.
Finally one gentleman in the group told her to keep her hands to herself, and she called him rude! She was so mad she rushed the entire group so fast when exiting, they could not pause for any further pictures.

If you think you will be treated as a guest, you are very wrong.

I would never again visit this canyon with a native guided tour.
They care for nothing but your fees.

We toured Antelope Canyon with Antelope Canyon Tours. We booked the tour the night before for the 9:30 am tour, which turned out to be a great time to go for the light. Our Navajo guide was very knowledgeable and took her time to point out how to get the best possible pictures. At one point, she even took the camera and lined up the shot for me.

Yes, it is expensive and yes, it is crowded during peak tourist season. However, 7 of us ranging in ages from 6 to 70 took the tour and found it to be beautiful and so different from everything we had seen. We have recommended it to several other people.

I took my family on Ken's tour into Lower Antelope Canyon at 9:30 in the morning, the sky was mostly sunny. Our "guide" was a young teenage boy that was mostly into listening to his I-Pod...I was very disappointed in the lack of color after seeing all the great pics of Antelope Canyon. The canyon seemed much more crowded than I expected also. I did a lot of online research prior to going and somehow was unprepared for the let down. I felt very ripped off... All I can figure is I went too early in the day for lower antelope...I've been to slots that are just as nice without the huge fees and crowds.

“A Dusty Ride to the Greatest Place on Earth”

We used Antelope Canyon Tours, which we booked prior to our trip, to view Antelope Canyon. We were supposed to be picked up at our hotel at 11:15am, and after a bit of confusion, they were very kind and picked us up, and brought us to the canyon. The canyon was located 10-15 minutes away, brought to the canyon on an open-aired jeep vehicle on paved roads, followed by a long stretch of desert sand. We went on a fairly windy day. If you like the taste of sand in your mouth, and feelings of sand in your eyes, this is the ride for you.

When we finally did get to the canyon, we were able to walk for 45 minutes through the caves with our guided tour. There were other tour groups there as well, and the canyon was quite crowded. You do feel a bit rushed taking your pictures, but if you move along, particularly with a digital camera, (therefore, you can delete pictures you don't like later). You are able to get some great shots.
When you get to the end of the canyon, your tour guide will allow you to walk freely by yourself and explore the canyon. Even then, you have limited time.

Hold on to your hat!!!!!!! Literally, as they do fall off, as I experienced, as my hat blew away. If anyone comes across a green Corona hat with pink lettering, please let me know :)
Overall, the trip was absolutely amazing and an adventure well worth the time and money.

Camera Tips: No flash, when you use it, pictures can come out blurry or with spots. They recommend you don't use it.
There is a fine sand in the air as you walk through the canyon. Be careful that your lens does not get ruined.
