The Gunflint Tavern is exactly what we expect when we go to Grand Marais--the menu is eclectic, the location is perfect, and it has the perfect combination of tourists and locals.
The menu has lots of options for vegetarians and great Mexican and local fish options. I love The Combo (tamale & enchiladas) and the mussel appetizer was awesome.
The Bloody Mary was one of the best I've ever had. Be sure to check out the outside rooftop bar which has a great view of the harbor and was always empty when we were there. It was like having your own private deck.
The reason why I gave the Gunflint only 4 stars is because I've been there several times and the staff in the restaurant always has attitude. They're slow and they have this "I'm so bored" attitude. The bar staff rocks, so I'm not sure what's up with the server attitude on the restaurant side. I think the bartender's name is Chris and he has great stories! It's also his Bloody Mary mix recipe. He is exactly what a tourist wants in a bartender--he volunteers some great info, tells you where to go, and even got us to try Sailor Jerry rum. I'm hooked.
Just one suggestion for the owner if they ever read this...., any restaurant that serves wine by the bottle needs to make sure their servers know how to serve it with some degree of confidance. I witnessed an absolutely painful struggle to open a bottle that lasted almost 5 minutes before the server plunked the bottle down on the table without pouring for the customers and then walked away without even a smile. It was painful.
We'll back again for Fall Colors and hopefully get to see them while we're enjoying a Bloody Mary on the rooftop!
