An emergency sent me to Grand Marais, and I selected this motel because of its location -- on Lake Superior. I stayed two nights in early May 2007.

The desk clerks were friendly, polite, efficient and helpful.

The room (two double beds) was nicely decorated, had a microware (not used), dorm-size fridge (not used), small table, two chairs and two phones.

The room was sparkling clean, the cleanest hotel room I've been in since staying at a Four Seasons in Dublin.

While the motel was fairly full, it was quite.

Breakfast was typical of those available from properties in this price range.

Best Features:
1) Clean.
2) Great location.
3) Fabulous staff.


Complaints (both minor):
1) Wireless access in my room was intermitent.
2) Coffee was not something I'd drink.

Summary: I'd would confidently recommend this motel to anyone traveling to Grand Marais and will stay here again.

FANTASTIC experience! While the hotel doesn't look like much from the road, we found the room and view incredible. We stayed in one of their king bed suites with a fireplace, hot tub, and balcony overlooking Lake Superior. The room and view were fantastic...two TVs, hot tub was perfect, bathrobes, refrigerator, fireplace...can't say enough good stuff. Only one small issue: terrible shower head water pressure. Easily overlooked by all the other fantastic amenities. Highly recommend staying in the suites!

Stayed for one night here in May. The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. The continental breakfast bar was well stocked and clean. If you love the lake Superior area you will love this place as it is right on the shore. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Also free wireless internet. If I am ever in that area again, I will definitely stay there!!

The view is the hotel - every room has a beautiful view of Lake Superior. (A few of the rooms in the John Beargrease wing may not have much of a view). The staff is always friendly here and make sure the breakfast bar is stocked each morning.
Rooms are spacious and clean in the main part of hotel (no pets here) with coffee makers. Rooms are a bit smaller in the original part of the hotel which ajoins the newer main part and they allow pets in this older section and also a bit more dated.
There is a public hot tub (no pool) which is fun for socializing but nothing fancy. You can often get special rates ($49-69) if you travel during the week or off season. Overall it is an inexpensive lodging option in Grand Marais and an easy walk into town
(it is actually on the edge of town) with great access to Sven and Oles, The Angry Trout , and the Gunflint Trail Bar etc. All areas of the property are always well maintained and clean despite the fact that pets are allowed in the old part of the hotel. (A great plus for pet owners) And they just added a free internet PC for guests in the front room.
