The Great Sand Dunes are a "not to be missed" place in Colorado. I know that the dunes are in a very out of the way spot. But, the extra effort to get there is well worth it --just to see this unusual sight. I think I read that these are the tallest dunes in North America. To add to the scene--they have a wonderful creek (the Medano Creek) running in front of the dunes. I'm not sure that the creek is running all year--because its seems to be fed by melting snow from the mountains. Once all the snow is melted, I guess there might not be any water there at all. We were there in June and the creek was really going. We were surprised to see the place strewn with beach-goers on our first visit. There were kids playing in the sand, people sunning and beach balls bouncing. The kids were loving this place. it was just like a day at the seashore--but you are in the middle of Colorado!! Who could have expected this? This year we took another trip to see the dunes again but the weather wasn't as cooperative as the first time. It was extremely windy and the little pebbles that are mixed with the fine sand (in some places) was stinging our skin as we tried to walk accross the dunes. We didn't stay too long on this trip because of the wind. But the place is still as scenic as ever. Our photos were beautiful --a wonderful memory of a beautiful place.
