“You Must See the Dunes!!!”

Great Sand Dunes National Monument

The Great Sand Dunes are a "not to be missed" place in Colorado. I know that the dunes are in a very out of the way spot. But, the extra effort to get there is well worth it --just to see this unusual sight. I think I read that these are the tallest dunes in North America. To add to the scene--they have a wonderful creek (the Medano Creek) running in front of the dunes. I'm not sure that the creek is running all year--because its seems to be fed by melting snow from the mountains. Once all the snow is melted, I guess there might not be any water there at all. We were there in June and the creek was really going. We were surprised to see the place strewn with beach-goers on our first visit. There were kids playing in the sand, people sunning and beach balls bouncing. The kids were loving this place. it was just like a day at the seashore--but you are in the middle of Colorado!! Who could have expected this? This year we took another trip to see the dunes again but the weather wasn't as cooperative as the first time. It was extremely windy and the little pebbles that are mixed with the fine sand (in some places) was stinging our skin as we tried to walk accross the dunes. We didn't stay too long on this trip because of the wind. But the place is still as scenic as ever. Our photos were beautiful --a wonderful memory of a beautiful place.

Outstanding, Awesome, Incredible - these are all words that come to mind when I think about the vistas from the top of these skyscraper tall sand dunes. This was my 2nd trip to the dunes. I had visited the "monument" (it is now a National Park- as of 9-13-04) back in the early 70s with my parents. At that time, I only made it part way to the top due to inclement weather. On my second visit (Sept. 2003) the weather was gorgeous and I made it to the top. Take plenty of water and some sunblock. It takes about 2 hrs to the top and back. They are much larger than they initially appear. The views are incredible. Should not be missed!! Oh yeah, and whatever you do, don't forget your camera with plenty of film.

We have just returned from our vacation and would like to write what a terrific time we had at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. They are almost complete building a new Visitors Center. My family wasn't sure what to expect but what an awesome sight when we got there. My husband and two sons - ages 14 and 12, climbed to the top. It took them 2 hours for the climb and return. I went about 1/2 way and set a blanket down to wait for them. It was wonderful, I spoke to people all across the country and watched children laughing and enjoying themselves as they conquered the dunes. My husband said you must climb to the top to see the awesome views. It is so neat to learn how these sand dunes were created. Some kids were even skiing at the top. Enjoy and take water with you.

6/13- Didn't know what to expect with the Great Sand Dunes. Arrive early because it get's hot (in the summer) and crowded. We arrived at 8 a.m. and hiked almost to the top of these dunes. They are UNBELIEVEABLE! The hike was strenuous. Don'
t let that stop you from trying it. I have arthritis and almost got to the top. You can go as far as you want and turn around whenever. There is a creek that goes through this place that people sunbathe by. PREPARE- LOTS OF WATER, SLEDS (for yourself or your kids), SNOWBOARDS... This is a GREAT PLACE! Bring your lunch as there is no food in the visitor station.
