I am going to write as an objective view as possible highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly. After reading the bad reviews and a couple of good before booking I decided to try and go ahead and give it a chance. Our family travels quite frequently and have never stayed at a Microtel.
On this trip, my daughter and I decided to visit relatives in North Carolina and decided to spend several days getting there from Texas, looking at the sites like Graceland along the way.
We were actually pretty pleased with the room andit looked clean when we walked in. From the reviews I actually took note that there wasn't any dirt or dust or mold. I did not notice any of these things. The size of the room was fine because we only slept here and that's it. About the sheets and towels, I will write about that in a sec.
More on the positive side- this place is VERYclose to the action on the main street and a half mile away from the Great Smokey Mountains entrance. It is also close to the Roaring Forks Auto Drive just right down the Historic Nature Rd. Many restaurants and attractions are just right down the rd within walking distance. So many to choose from. We arrived on a Sat and it was almost just way too crowded, we escaped to the peace of the forest as quickly as we could. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are very Disneyesque and Las Vegas in the style of attractions which I did not expect at all. When visiting the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone it is much more nature oriented.
The breakfast is very simple but it was fine, there are hotels that look way shabbier on the outside in the area than this place.
Most of the hotel staff are pretty friendly for the most part. A man at the desk tried to help me with map directions.
The negative- at night after pulling the sheets back on the first night they were full of long black hair. My daughter has blonde and I have red. This is before we laid down and I kept finding more and more. I was really nauseous. I wondered how many ppl slept in those sheets before I saw them. I have pics and have to figure out how to post. Also smeared makeup that did not look like a stain, but fresh. At that point I got our own sheets and pillows out of the car. Really grossed out. One towel had a smeared stained streaks on it and on the bathroom floor was a bed bug looking bug on the floor.
The place does smell badly of smoke but mostly on the smokers side. The place is divided down the middle by an elevator. Smoking on one side and non smoking on the other. We were at the far end of nonsmoking and it was not bad and I'm sensitive to smells. The smoking side though, sooooo disgusting!
The second day I left a nice note for the maid nicely asking for clean sheets which was done from what I could tell. The kicker was the maid threw out two giant bottles (or kept) of new shampoo that I was planning on using on our three week road trip. The front desk gave me a little hotel sized bottle to replace it. I was really not happy about them throwing the shampoo out. We kept all valuables locked in the car, boy I'm glad we did!
Overall, this place could be so much better but the maids obviously could care less. You might get what you pay for but there is nooooo excuse for filthy sheets. If thats going to happen they need to charge thirty bucks a night. If we go back to Gatlinburg we will probably stay elsewhere.
